Labrador next week??
 

Anyone else from HU around to ride through Labrador next week?
I'll be in Montreal tonight then heading eastward, route undecided as yet (now there's a surprise:innocent:).

I might be heading that way in a day or two. Are you planning mainly dirt or paved roads? Hotels or camping? I'm in Hamilton Ontario right now with street tires on, my TKC80's are in Saint John NB at a friends house.

Just as I thought I was going to be No Mates Norma (yet again!) Hi Planethopper - I'm not sure where North Bay is but I am currently in Labrador City - a bit of a misleading name as the place has about 2000 people and would barely make it as a village in England.

getting my starter looekd at later today I hope then maybe continuing towards Goose Bay/Happy Valley tomorrow- if you see me on the road you won't be able to miss me - the batterd yellow/black BMW bike, english number plates and a Chicks Rule sticker - and err, I seem to be the only bike on the road anyway- no other bikes since leaving the tarmac yesterday morning.
And has anyone noticed...there's a hurricane on its way in!
Having only spoken french for the past three days - I have now increased my vocabulary to include "ouragan" (hurricane)- I've been trying to translate how strong everyone says it's going to be- but trying to understand Quebecois accent can be a bit tricky at the best of times, when they're excited about Ouragan Earl, it's even harder!

I am somewhere between Quebec City and River de Loop. Still heading east. I might be meeting up with a friend to do the Cabot Trail but we all know how that goes, I'll be doing it myself. If I would have seen your post earlier I would have definitely hooked up with you for the whole Trans Labrador trip.

make sure you travel to Gross Mourne National Park on the western side of Newfoundland. Spend a few days hiking there - amazing topography.
Another place not very near there which is amazing is the Gaspe Peninsula in Quebec on the southern shore of the St Lawrence. it's a long way from anywhere else, but it is very unique.

Hurricane is Here
 

The hurricane may have lessened in ferocity but it has struck here in Labrador with a vengeance.
I'm lucky enough to be staying with friends who live in Goose Bay, so from the comfort of their apartment in the Royal Inn, I can look out of the window at poor Thelma sat in the carpark. She's rocking around a bit in the massive gusts of wind and standing in a puddle of rain several inches deep :funmeterno:


I am sooooooooooooo glad I'm not out there riding and camping in this.
Hoping to head on towards Cartwright on the east coast tomorrow if the weather clears.

Planethopper - where are you?

Probably this won't appeal, but just in case....there are Twin Otter flights, a weekly (at least) mail boat, plus freight and fishing boats going north along the Labrador coast, with regular service to Nairn and intermittent trips further north. It's remarkable country with bare fiords, icebergs, caribou and a mix of Cree and Inuit culture transported only recently into the modern age. Try to get up there if you can.

Otherwise....I'll second Grosse Morne and the Gaspe, and raise you Cape Bretton, l'Anse aux Meadows and anyplace road-accessible on the east coast once you're over in Newfoundland. And now that you speak fluent French there's always St. Pierre and Miquelon, too. Just try to clear out of the Maritimes before the wet and winds of autumn--it gets a lot worse than a worn-out tropical storm would suggest.

I came down to Saint John NB to ride out the storm at a friends place. Didn't feel like riding out the storm in a tent. I need to get my 10K service done so I'm heading to Moncton tomorrow in hopes that they can squeeze me in then I'll hit the Cabot Trail.

Been a couple of decades since I was up that way, but back in the day you could take the highway up to Meat Cove on the northern end of Cape Bretton (as good as it gets), then follow forest roads out into the Crown Land along the wild section of coast past town. Beautiful forest, muskeg and seacliffs. Worth a side trip if you want to get off the pavement for a half-day.
