Importing costs and paper work in to the USA
Hi,
It is just an idea crossing our minds at the moment. We have driven our overlander truck from the UK to Thailand (25,500 km) and are planning to drive back, however, our new thoughts are North America then possibly South America, I know that this is much diferent to our first thought. I am hoping that I can get some general information before we decide, like shipping costs from South East Asis to the USA, the easiest port to enter and exit in North America, how long can we keep it there, can we leave it there and fly home to the UK and then return say 2 or 3 months later. Our Truck is 21 years old and registered in the UK and we are both UK citizen's. Hope you can give us some idea's Dave & Les www.plodd.net Plodd - A Trip of a Lifetime www.overlandersthailand.com Overlanders - Stellplatz stop over |
Possibly better to ship to Canada and drive it over the border into the US, temporarily importing into Canada very easy, you can deal with customs yourself, it took me about 5 minutes to do my bike.

Not difficult to do a temporary import into the USA, either. Certain hoops might be slightly different, but the basic procedures are very similar.
Shipping costs vary by port, agent, route, whims of petty bureaucrats, phases of the moon, etc. You might start with a search of these forums, since you're certainly not the first person to try such a thing, and at least some of your questions have been answered repeatedly. Also have a look at the shipping database: Shipments by Travellers | Horizons Unlimited. Hope that's helpful. Mark |
