Help from whitehorse!
 

We have finally made it, and are just to enter alaska but we had a little problem with my bike (KTM 990 adventure S) the chain went slack and snapped off part of the chain housing. Now I don't think it is too bad but when I tried to tighten up the chain the chain tensioning bolt is completely stuck and won't budge. I limped into whitehorse in the knowledge that they had a ktm dealer, but little did i know their only mechanic is on holiday! I called yamaha, their mechanic doesn't like working on anything that isn't yamaha and I called listers,kawasaki even harley....nothing. I also am trying to find a rear tyre in particular a tkc, or even a dunlop 908 but nothing.

Basically we (bikerchick & myself) are stuck can anyone help or suggest anything.

Not familiar with KTMs but have you tried borrowing a soldering iron and heating/cooling the bolt interspersed with liberal amounts of WD40 while gently trying to shift it? Usually frees up most stuck bolts unless you've stripped the head.

Try the Honda dealer in Whitehorse .

Failing that ,the Downtown Hotel in Dawson City - some guys leave part worn tyres there for riders who are in need .
In Alaska try The Abbey [Wassilla], Alaska Leather [Anchorage] or Adventure Cycleworks [Fairbanks]for a new tyre .


Any half decent mechanic should be able to free off that bolt for you .
A Yamaha mechanic who can't work out how to tighten the chain on a KTM is just shittin you .

When you get that adjustment bolt loose [heat and or penetrating oil ],use some grease or Copper Coat on the threads .

There must be a some shop around that can do it it is just a stuck nut. Think the nut is gust jammed try a bit of heat and penetrating oil you can get some at a car parts shop. Then try to turn the nut left and then right may take a bit of time do not rush it. If there is thread that is bent it will tight all the way out past that point but will be ok best if you can chase the threads with a die. The yamaha and kawasaki shops may have one.

Just do it slow, turn too hard and snap you need new parts.

Try a 6 pack of beer on the shop boys seems to work better than $.

Go see Jon over at the Honda shop - they are a mixed auto and motorcycle dealership. Best guy in town. He will be able to find you a tire - they have TKC in stock and can probably help fix the adjuster.

I was just there last week in need of a front tire on my Wee strom after our ride on the Dempster. He had me set up with a used Tourance and out the door in 45 minutes
