Camping Moab,UT region?
I will get to Moab just next week.
My plan is to put up a tent and stay there for a week or so. Last time I tried to camp in this area (I think it was in Arches NP) I was allowed to camp in the designated areas only and those were already fully booked. Is there a place where I can put up my tent for a couple of days without booking in advance etc..? What are the general rules for camping in this area? If I manage to find a lonesome spot (outside the parks), could I just put up my tent there? (Or would I have to use an official camping site?) Cheers, Wauschi |
Get a good map. On DNR land you can camp anyplace--there's lots of it, and some is truly spectacular. In National Parks you can camp only in designated campgrounds, and only at a price. In Wilderness Areas you can't ride a mechanized vehicle. On private or tribal land, you follow the owner's rules, which may include camping in campgrounds or wild camping, depending. Etc.
There is an abundance of good, free camping not far from Moab. But I'd guess that in April there should also be sites available at many of the National Park campgrounds--just show up early and try your luck. Hope that's helpful. Mark |
Mark,
thanks for the explanation. I'm on the way. Wauschi |
Back in November 2015, the campsites in the south rim of Canyonlands NP (entrance near Monticello) were free and spectacular!!
There were some inputs on iOverlander, so you can check if they are still free. But the sunset views.. OH MY GOD! |
