British citizens bringing bikes registered in USA accros Canadian boarder and back
 

Hello all,

Does anyone have any experience as a British citizen entering Canada (from Buffalo) with motorcycles registered in the USA? We own the bikes and they are registered to an address in Florida. We will then re-enter the USA a few days later at Detroit.

Also, if anyone has any advice as to what route to take from Buffalo to Detroit (either on the Canadian or American side) it would be greatly appreciated.

Not bikes but we drove our US-registered motorhome into Canada. We also had the certificate from our insurer certifying that the insurance covered Canada as well.

Easy border crossings - perhaps as Australia and Canada are very similar in many respects. Flicked through our passport, asked us where we were headed and asked if he could come along. Same when we came from Alaska south.

I'm sure POMS will get a warm welcome too. If not, tell them you will send Charles over to sort them out.

Not recent, but we did exactly that in 2001. British citizens with bikes bought and registered in Massachusetts, rode all over the US and Canada with no problems whatsoever. Border officials were more intrigued when, in 2006, we shipped our own British-registered bikes. Still no real difficulties.

Same route too, Buffalo to Detroit. We used the main highway as we weren't particularly interested in seeing anything other than Niagara Falls and one or two friends who live in Ontario. However, we only used the 'Windsor-Detroit' crossing once and wouldn't choose to do so again. Had to stop for fuel on the US side and pulled off the Interstate. It's rough around Detroit. Fuel station cashiers operate from behind armoured glass windows. We felt intimidated when a car full of 'hoodies' pulled in, so didn't bother to remove our helmets. Another traveller told us that a hold-up had happened in a gas station when they visited. The shutters came down before they were able to pay for their fuel, so they were basically told to get the "flock outa there". We now use the Sarnia border crossing to the north, whenever we visit.
