Australians touring North America

My wife and I and our bike (2011 Yamaha Super Tenere) will be arriving in Portland Or. for a 10 week tour. We will be riding two up and are looking for any advise, suggestions etc. for our journey.
We will be travelling north up the Sea to Sky Highway then on the Casiar highway. We will be staying in Hyder Alaska for a few days then onto Fairbanks.
Our return will be on the Taylor highway, Top of World Highway, Campbell Highway to Watson Lake B.C. We will then plan to take small northern highways across Canada and circle the Great lakes with a visit to Wisconsin. Then down to New Orleans and back to Portland via Arkansas and New Mexico.
We have estimated about 25,000 km. in 10 weeks.
Look forward to any feedback and suggestions anyone may have.
Also was wondering if a side trip to Haines Alaska would be worth it.

Sounds like a good trip - lot of distance for a 2 up ride in 10 weeks though.

If you can squeeze it do Yellowstone and Yosemite and have some time in BC.

jeffrey g 1 Feb 2013 21:39

We did the two national parks last time we did a tour, we did about 15,000km
in 5 weeks on our Kawasaki Vulcan vn2000. We will decide if we will head to New Orleans once we reach Wisconsin, we may skip that part of the ride and head west through the upper states. Thanks for the feedback.

Great lakes area

When you tour the great Lakes area in Ontario, give us a email at the shop
we have a spare room and a BBQ that has hosted some Aussies in the past.

Cheers
Cath
email is sales@dualsportplus.com just tell them you heard us of the HU board.

If you think we are crazy, Ken and Carol Duval will confirm it. :rofl

heck even Grant and Susan will confirm it.

Austalians great lake tour

Thanks for the offer, I think we will be taking you up on that. We are planning to be in the Thunder Bay area around the 5th of August if all goes well. We will contact you when we are closer to your area.
Cheers, Jeffrey

  • I owe a lot of favors to those who have helped me out as I traveled the world, so if I can pay some back by being of assistance let me know. I am north of Portland 70 miles, (we are still in the stone age here and have not got to kilometers yet). I could collect you at the airport and help get bike sorted, If you are shipping a crated bike we could put it on the pickup haul to my shop so you have a crate to put it in to ship back. At least stop by on your way north we always have a place to camp and normally a bed. As I said I owe a lot of people around the world and the only way I can pay them back is to pass it on so don't be shy, let me know what you need on this end because I know how much it helps to have someone on the other end.

Like Road Hog, above, I am named Bob and can offer assistance (because we also owe to many others from our trips) but unlike Road Hog we live 15 minutes from the Portland, OR airport and harbor. We can offer a room and bath to wash off the stink of the airplane before you head out. We don't have room for a crate, but I have a pickup to take it to Road Hog's place if needed. We can offer a place to stay for arrival or pre-departure to take care of the details.

You can contact us at bob (at sign) bobkatsjaunt (dot) com.

(Road Hog: I'm not trying to steal your thunder, just offering another option. Of course, your're welcome to visit too if you get to Vancouver, WA.)

If you are looking to shave off miles from the trip and save time there is a ferry boat from Bellingham WA FerryTravel.com - Book Bellingham ferries to Alaska, Victoria & to Friday Harbor easily quickly & securely online.

jeffrey g 11 Mar 2013 03:30

Thanks for that, I did look into that but part of the journey is getting there.
We are planning on stopping in Hyder, and Haines Alaska on the way up from Portland so ferry travel would not work with this trip.
Thanks again for the feedback.

Australians touring North America

Greetings Jeffrey g. Like your effort to cover this type of distance in such a short time.. The roads are certainly good enough for you to do this though. There is a lot to see and absorb along the way. We did a similar route last year although a little slower. What months will you be here? We will be in California, Oregon, Washington and British Colombia in June, July and possibly August. If you get over to the Phoenix AZ area we have Aussie friends who are used to hosting motorcycle travellers. You may also like to look at www.motorcycle-travel.net and the HU Communities for assistance/accommodation. Contact us if you need any further info.. We are into our third year of travel in North America.. Can highly reccommend Bob (Road Hog) and Catherine (waterlilly) as great people although Catherine's sanity sometimes can be called into question!!!!!!!:taz:

Cheers and catch you on the road.

Austalains tour

Hi Ken And Carol,
Thanks for the feedback. We will definitely be in Oregon from July 3rd and then set out for B.C. and beyond from July 8th. I know we are most likely being too eager on this trip. Our only deadline is to get to Wisconsin by August 11. This gives us about 5 weeks on the road to Alaska and across Canada. If we are getting behind the plan will be to head towards the free ways but hopefully it will not come to this. We will then spend two weeks in Wisconsin and then with over three weeks left we will see which way to head back to Portland (hopefully via New Orleans our favourite city). We lived in Phoenix about seven years ago and am hoping to maybe head back that way if time permits so may take you up on your friends in the area.
Thanks again for the feedback and hopefully will catch you on the road.
Jeffrey & Helen

Hi Jeff, My computer crashed last week and I lost all our emails. I have bought a new one and am getting it up and running. Please send me your address again, I'm collecting the material we discussed. It will soon be ready to send to you.

Hi jefferyG.
If you needing info or a place to stop on your way through New Mexico let us know. We live just outside of Albuquerque (east side). We love talking to others about their adventures travelling and sharing what we know of the area.

Safe and happy riding

Just here to point out that you can take the Alaska ferry from Bellingham to Prince Rupert, a day's ride from Hyder, then carry on up the Cassiar Highway to the Yukon and Alaska. There are also BC ferry possibilities which don't skip Hyder (or Haines, which is another story entirely).

Our trip around North America has begun, our Super Tenere has arrived in Portland and with some valuable help from another Hubb member(bobcat) it is fitted out and ready for our 11 week ride.

We had some great weather on our ride up to Vancouver and were glad to get out of the cities for awhile.

We rode up the Sea to Sky which gave me a chance to see how the bike handled with all the camping gear and my wife on the curves up into the mountains.

We then started three days of rain and cold riding up into B.C. Temperatures were well under 50f and we rain into some extreme wind and hail along the way.

We are now in Hyder Alaska and had a great ride up the cassias. The weather was great, the roads were smooth with lots of curves, very little traffic, snow covered mountains on either side and lots of wild life.

We will be heading up towards Whitehorse and fairbanks next with a side trip down to Haines.

Looking tot catch up with others on the way.

Aussie Riders

Greetings and great to hear from you. We are house sitting in Maple Valley just south of Seattle until the 15th August then will make our way up to Canada hoping to do the Nakusp BC H U Meeting before heading across to Montana and down through Glacier N P, Colorado, Utah and Arizona by the 20th September... house sitting again. Traveling a little quicker than usual. The AZ house is our base in the USA so maybe this could be the rendezvous location. Keep in touch.. Cheers and enjoy the ride... K & C

Maybe I should pay better attention to what you are doing! I was in Seattle last week taking Sharon to the Airport - it would have been nice to drop past and say hello.
