Wadi Halfa to Aswan ferry price

Can anybody tell me how much it is going to cost to get me and my bike from Wadi Halfa to Aswan?
Does this have to be paid in Sudanese pounds or can I pay in dollars?
Does my bike have to go on a barge or can I take it on the ferry? I get conflicting answers to this

It cost several hundred USD to get the bike and I on the ferry from WH to Aswan. I took a first class cabin though- and was glad I did. I had a couple buddies I visited down in "steerage," and times were tough for the boys. The heat was the worst part. The bike can be put on the ship. Click on the link to my website, then click on "Sudan." There is a pic of the men loading my bike there. Be prepared for 3-5 days of paperwork when you reach Aswan. Unlike Wadi, there is much to see, do and eat in Aswan. You'll love it there after WH! Hook.

Another option is to sleep on the roof (or should that be top deck?).
Distinct lack of gutsy Irish jigs going on in steerage.

Good point Richard! If you have the gear, by all means take the top deck and fall asleep while stargazing. My buddies were backpacking and didn't have sleeping pads/bags, etc. Also be advised: the ship is "dry," like Sudan, perhaps this explains the "lack of the Irish!" Ride safe, H!

....and for a Landrover

Sorry to butt in on this thread, but if the cost is that much for a bike....then how much are they likely to charge for a Land Rover?

I hate to think.....still gotta do it to continue the trip up the east coast, unless there's an alternative someone knows about?!?

Hope so, Ben

It's a while since I was there, but I imagine it's still a major expense. The land border has been firmly closed for a long time.

Another problem for 4 wheelers is capacity - you may end up waiting for space on the ferry. Like Hook says - an enjoyable prospect in Aswan, less so in Wadi Halfa!

some prices

At the time I took the ferry in mid-2007, these were the costs: (prices in Egyptian Pounds: 1 Euro= 8 EG Pounds)
1st class: 385. 2nd class: 240. "top deck": 170.
Motorcycle: 370. Car/4x4: 2500. All prices will probably go up rather than down. A car/4x4 won't fit on the ferry. A barge must be hooked up to the ferry and towed. This takes some doing- and time. Don't show up on the day the ferry sails and expect to drive on to the barge- you'll just spend a week waiting for the next ship! You must make prior arrangements. Look up the Nile River Valley Transport Corporation. They have an office in Cairo, 02-575-9058. Some of the finest people on the planet await you in Sudan. Good luck! H.
