Tunisia - Algieria
 

Hello
Have you any recent info about crossing Tunisia from Tunis to Taleb Larbi?
I mean security, problems etc.
We want to visit Djanet area in 2017 with 3 or 4 cars.
I haven't heard about any threats from last year but in Polish FA web site Tunisia is "red colour".
What do you think about it?

What I have been told recently: Djanet area is now accessible again, even with your car (so, I suppose it means you can enter in Algeria through Taleb Larbi border post, with a guide and an Algerian agency).
Tam area seems no possible for the moment.

I have the same info about Algieria.
But what do you think about threats in Tunisia? There are not many travelers these days. It is only about 500 km througt cities and viligies, but I don't know what think about it.
I was in Tunisia in 2009 but everything changes now.

I don't think it's dangerous to cross Tunisia these days, if you stay away from some areas near Algerian border (especially near Kasserine, see maps from French or English MFA):

BTW, I'm planning a 15 days trip Tunisia (October) including 5 or 6 days in the Sahara area.

There are some red marks near the borders and even in borders points but I think it is not a big threat.
The best would be post from somebody who did it recently.
I'm planning about 28 days trip in January with 12-15 days in Algiera (including Djanet area)

Tunisia is very safe. Entering Algeria will require a visa of course (and not the easiest to get). And as for going south to Djanet, I am afraid it will be extremely difficult to get an authorization. I was supposed to ride to Djanet/Tamanrasset in April and even the group of Tunisian/Algerian/Moroccan riders I was going with couldn't get the authorization. I don't thnk things got any better

I also think that Tunisia is safe.
Geting algierian visa is easy in Poland. My friend got it in 2 weeks. Trip in Djanet area with guide of course.
We got info from the same guide that overland travel is also possible. We will start it in September.
Tammanraset is closed now.

Afaik, to get to Djanet you must stick to the highway until nearly there (1500km?). Only Essendilene canyon and Tadrart region SW of Djanet are open to 4x4, so it's a long old drive for a bit of off-road. Even then the last 400km from Illizi is pretty spectacular and you could spend a great few days in the Tadrart and Merzouga dunes, beyond. If you can negotiate leaving Fadnoun plateau early and heading for Afara and coming round Tazat mountain for the road to Djanet, so much the better.
It's worth a day's hike up to Jabbaren rock art too (an hour out of Djanet).
Shame all that great desert is going to waste ;-(

I received the authorization few days ago for 14 people for Sebeiba +Tadrart. It takes one week only - much faster than previous years. Algerian Embassy in Warsaw needs the passports for one week only. All is easy.
Bartosz, you can make Tadrart circit (ca 6 days) + northern circuit (Djanet-Timras-Tikoubene-Essendilene-Tin Abaro-Tin Moma-Tin Batoulet-Ifdandiwan-Afara-Tazat (ca 6-7 days). All of these places are open now.

Just to say that last I've visited this area (Nov 2012), it was not authorized for us to go to Afara and around Tazat MT.
But we were able to go to Dider area and surroundings (nice place, too).
YEs, few days (or more?) in Tadrat is a must, also because,may be, you will be alone there (like us in 2012!).

Does anyone have any updates considering safety in tunisia? I read a couple of ride reports in german websites saying that it's safer than about two years ago?
Me and three friends are planning a two weeks trip in summer right now.

Just to say we have done our trip in Tunisia, including several days in desert (South of Douz).
No security issues, a lot of checkpoints on the roads , but when they see we are tourists,
they say welcome and we can pass without control.

Empty ferries, no tourists in Tunisia, many friendly checkpoints, some police schizofrenia about our walkie-talkie but ok. For me it is wonderful time now to visit Tunisia and Algieria.
