Sudan Entry Issues
 

Hey guys,
I got a question concerning entering Sudan and the problems you may encounter when getting there via Israel, Jordan, Egypt. My plan is like this:

I will take a ferry from Greece to Israel (Haifa). I have two passports but will nevertheless try to get the Israeli stamp onto a seperate paper only. I will then enter Jordan. Say I will use passport A there, and I will then have a Jordan immigration stamp in passport A, which probably will show that I was coming from Israel.

Will this be a problem when entering Sudan?

I will then continue to Amman and will apply for the Egypt visa there. Then go on to Aqaba and take the ferry to Nuweiba. In which passport do you think should I have the Egypt visa? Maybe Passport B and use this one also for the entry into Sudan? Won't they ask how I got into Jordan, because an immigration stamp from Jordan in passport B is missing?

Not done this myself but from what I have read, faint evidence of passing through israel is not a problem for most overlanders entering Sudan, far less Egypt which has land border, despite the 'no israeli ppt stamps' rule.
If he can be bothered to look, Sudan border man will know exactly what you have done and see the 'date gap'. But as long as everything is in order and there is no excuse to make difficulties, I believe they overlook it. Of course better not to rub it in their face so do the loose bit of paper thing with Israel and play the game.

Although they are handy, better not to be too clever with 2 passports IMO. That may work in Schengen Europe but it is officially illegal to travel with 2 ppts and where there is a trail of ppt visa stamps for the previous few countries, the missing info - as you have guessed - could cause complications.

Chris, thanks for your reply, that's also what I've heard so far.
And yes, the 2nd ppt....I think I will have it hidden deep inside my bags...just as a backup...

Nevertheless....another possibility I thought about: In Amman go to the police (with a copy of ppt A) tell them ppt A got stolen, get a paper from the police that confirms the stolen ppt. Then try to get a new immigration stamp in Amman in my "new" ppt B. This way I would have a complete "clean" ppt. :innocent:

Any opinions about that? :cool4:

I am sure people who have done this recently will confirm there is really no need to do all this.

I believe the whole 'no Iz stamps for Sudan visas' is a bit of a red herring - possibly invoked with less leniency if you
• act arsey at the embassy
• the border guy is having a bad day (which is what backsheesh is for)
• or perhaps when Israel is seen to be over-reacting to the periodic intifadas.

Didn't someone post a recent Taba-Eilat (Eg > Iz) border crossing?
So no need to go via Jordan. Or is Taba only one way and Sinai closed?
I have not been following.

Carrying a backup ppt is handy of course - like when hotels annoyingly make you leave it at reception. I once lost mine in Morocco so left with the other. It was one of the few, if not only times I actually had both with me.
No one noticed on exit but this was in the days when it was all a bundle at Ceuta.
With computer records I don't think that would work in Mk today.

Yes, maybe I'm too much concerned. I will try to do it with one passport and just avoid israeli stamps.
Nevertheless I will go via Jordan, seems to be more safe, and I'll have the Nuweiba entry stamp.
I will report here how it all worked out ;) I plan to be at the sudan border around the middle of november or so.

2 passports illegal ?
 

Hi Chris, could you elaborate on that? I have in the past regularly traveled using 2 passports (on occasion even three), it was all legal under the laws of the fine land issuing the passports. Of course it is easier when entering by air as there is no clear trail of evidence...

You are right Andras (not illegal in all but a couple of countries). Depends how you use them, though. Certainly to get a visa and stamped in with one and try to leave with the other (or even let them know that you have 2) is asking for complications.

Was told that one traveller was stamped in and out of a country with one passport and then to avoid visa fees, tried to get into the next country (by land border) with the other passport. Was refused entry because there was no proof that he got there legally. Then produced the other one and got into more trouble.
