some Libya questions (routes and fuel)

hello to all

I'm planning my holidays in Libya and after much reading I have some questions

We are planning to do the L2 route from Ghadames to Serdeles and in the CS book he says that it's around 600 kms. In the Gandini book he says that for the approximately the same route is around 900kms (parcours A)!

So... how many kms to do this route?

I'm also doing some fuel calculations and diesel for 600 kms is not the same for 900kms!

We are travelling in 2 land rover 110 300 tdi and I don’t have much experience with this engine. What is the expected fuel consumption in desert / dunes?

Resuming the post how much fuel do you recommend to drive a loaded 110 from Ghadames to Serdeles passing near the Algerian border?

Thanks in advance
Bernardo feio

So... how many kms to do this route?

I'm not immune to mistakes but I am pretty sure it's not 900kms if you go direct.

...what is the expected fuel consumption in desert / dunes?

I've travelled with LR300s and if you simply bank on 5kpl you'll make it with plenty to spare. There is only a little sand on this route (but see below).

... passing near the Algerian border?

Note that L2 no longer crosses into Algeria as decribed in the book, but passes to the east. It may well go through more- or trickier dunes as I believe the point of going into Alg was to minimise the dune stage; the guide will know.

Not to highjack your thread, but what book are you referring to? I'm looking for any information about travelling in Libya, especially routes and agencies for guides.

Thanks,
Hans.

thanks to all

Chris:

if I understand right to go from Ghadames to Serdeles I will just have to take 120 litres of diesel?? is it not to much optimism?

One other question:

I've never been in Tunisia and I don’t know what kind of traffic they have.

how long will we take from Tunes to Nalut?

Thnks

Hello,
I am used to go in Libya, i drive toy benzine!
From Ghadames to Serdeles i need 180 l of benzine. It depend what way you choose... I would say the minimum of sand distance is about 100 km.
In Tunisia you have 150km highway and 400 km of normal good road average max.80km/h.
I would not go direkt Nalut because you are not secure to enter at this point. Go best Ras Ajdir.
I can give you the adress of a very good guide.
bon vent

Bernardo,

We did the route between Ghadames and Al Awainat last February - ca. 640 km.

I can't advise you about fuel consumption for your LR, but my landcruiser HDJ80 used about 140L of diesel (I have two tanks anyway).

The length of the route you take depends how far eastward you wish to go into the Awbari Sand Sea. We went fairly close to the Algerian border. You can see the route here: http://tinyurl.com/35xs6w

Your guide should know, anyway, (inshalla) how long it will take and how much fuel you need to carry ...

Land Rover fuel consumption

I drove 1,000km in Libya through the Kalansho Sand Sea, from Jagbub to Tmissa, with three Land Rovers last November.
We were 8 passengers plus all supplies, water and fuel – ie, heavily loaded.
All cars performed very well.
The going was soft and sandy, and we were in low-ratio and second gear for several hours every day.
The Land Rover Discovery TD300 recorded 15.9mpg overall = 5.63 kpl
The two Land Rover Defender TD5’s achieved 14.9 mpg overall = 5.27 kpl
These figures confirm CS’s calculations exactly
Day reports of our journey are here… Kit Constable Maxwell's Website

Chris message is accurate...

...in all areas.

It's a simple route, and the first third is very easy going so you can be heavy if necessary.

Sam.

Hello

Thanks to all!!

Did any one did the “S” route in the Gandini book? (Page 103, 104, 105)

It starts in Tsawah and ends in Serdele passing in the Tilemsine pass and in L’Iguidi Wan Kassa...

In the book he says that it’s about 700 kms.. my question is how many days to do this route?

Thanks in advance

Georges 13 Jul 2007 08:07

Helo Bernardo,
you can do this route in 3-4 days but what a shame... if you don't visit some places in Messak and Akakus.
Don't go to Tesawa, go west after fiew km from Maknusa and follow the edge of the erg Murzuk. i can give you the wp or the route in OZI format if you want.
bye
