Sahara highway
Hi,
Is there anybody out there at nothern Mauretania, who can definietly state what is the status of the modern Sahara highway made by Egyptians, ie. the road between the Fort Guerguarat-Nouadhibou-Nouakchott? Is there any new border post between the countries? Would you please let me know the GPS coordinates! |
Hi Danek,
I used this route a couple of weeks ago. There are many sections of tarmac from Nouadhibou to Nouakchott, some of them are finished, others are still being worked on. Where the sections aren't finished, it's piste running alongside. There are also sections where nothing has been built yet, let alone tarmac'd. The local Police say it'll be finished in October but there's no way it'll be done until at least this time next year. The borders are still the same. The route mentioned on the Sahara Overland site from the railway to Nouadhibou is incorrect. Instead of following the right-hand side of the tracks, cross them and take the main piste to Nouadhibou. I drove from Nouadhibou to Nouakchott in 8 hours of constant driving with only a couple of sections of softish sand. But there are some bad corrugations as you near Nouakchott on this route. If you want GPS coordinates of where the tarmac sections start and finish let me know, I'll email them to you. B |

"If you want GPS coordinates of where the tarmac sections start and finish let me know, I'll email them to you."
Any reason why you don't just post them all here? |
|
One reason is that there are quite a few of them, the second is that I also include a track file in xls or mapsource format to show the whole route from Nouadhibou to Nouakchott.
If anyone can tell me how to post a file then I will. B |
Hi ya,
Email them to me - I'll whack them on a server and provide a url etc |

Hi,
I'd love a copy of the waypoints also. Have tried emailing BenW but no response as yet. Thanks Pete (pete@lewistribe.co.uk) |
I've asked for a copy of the files and will post them on HU for all.

"The route mentioned on the Sahara Overland site [pdf] from the railway to Nouadhibou is incorrect. Instead of following the right-hand side of the tracks, cross them and take the main piste to Nouadhibou"
Yes, this does not sound right to me and I was there years ago. I'll get the Plymouth Dakar to update the pdf over Xmas (assuming they go the easy way). Ch Ch |
Hi all,
have been away from the net with work for the last couple of weeks. Will send the files out in the next day or so now I'm back with a web connection. Bear with me! Thanks B |
Hi
After clearing IRM customs and police, take the left track beyond the post, this leads to railway, cross the tracks and follow to nouadhibou leaving the rails on your right side.In last years Plymouth Dakar we didnt and finished up on the old Piste Hispanol, it took us ages and a lot of digging, especialy at the old Berm. However we did have the dubious pleasure of seeing the blown up gaz delivery van (as mentioned in lonely planet) Regards Dave |
Hi Grant.I can't find them fils on HU,can you Pls. e mail them to me?
Many thanks! Adam. Quote:
