repair needed in tunis tunisa

Hi guys. Dose anyone know where I could get a final drive seal for a BMW gsa replaced in Tunisia. I've just discovered mines leaking. Thanks in advance.

Google finds it it a split second here.
Check by phone first that it does bikes- if not they csan get the part in for you.
You might to also consider set of spare fork seals, FPC and ring antenna ...

Thanks buddy

Thanks again Bertrand. Hopefully they will be able to help. The seal is. Not completely gone but the oil is vapourising out so best get it replaced.

If your bearings are not damaged, then you are not stranded.
If your adv (and I am guessing here) is the same spec oil-wise as my old 1200Gs, then it takes SAF-XO* I'm going to assume you are not carrying any.
Here are the specs of the SAF-XO
API GL-5 if you can find a gear oil with that spec- buy it
SAE 75W-90

You may be able to find Syntrax Longlife Universal 75W-90 - you will have to flush out old oil first as to not mix them.

I understand you don't have the seal but when you do, it can be replaced easily- you just pop off the black plastic cover careful not damage it, remove the seal, check that the bearings don't have any roughness in them or that there is any evidence of metal chaff, wipe clean, place new seal, pop cover which is a push fit.
Then it's just a question of draining the old oil and replacing it-
I can talk you through this if need be. It isn't hard
Tip: a syringe and a piece of shrink wrap tube to fit on the end make the ideal 're-filler' tool- A straw works too taped tight or zip tied to syringe nipple.

p.s check seal- Not necessarily damaged- if you've been bouncing a lot off road it could have become unseated.
Impossible to tell how much oil has sprayed out so you'll need to drain out anyway and replace. Overfilling will cause seal to blow out!

Thanks again buddy. Its an 09 adventure I'm riding. I have chained the oil in the FD before so I should be able to fix it if I can get a seal. Dose the black ring just pop off? I'm guessing I will need to order the seal from BMW. Hopefully there's no Bering damage. I had this seal replaced about a year ago as well. They told me at the time engine oil would do if I was stuck. This was in Guatemala though.

Toyark 19 Oct 2013 11:35

If you are totally stuck any oil is better than no oil- Think laterally for any gear oil - lot of gear boxes out there- whatever you fit, drive in accordance and don't go setting land speed records!

Yes the black cover will pop off if you gently coax it out- no worries.

As you do not know how much oil is left in there, best thing IMHO is, when you get some oil, drain what is in the FD into a clean & dry container and check for swarf. Check volume too out of interest.

You can then pop off the cover and check the seal for damage. It may still be OK! (always think positive!)

The volume is critical- 0.22 litre
Once drained, if using a different oil (the SAF-XO of my time is no longer used/available and replaced by above Syntrax Longlife Universal as above)
You'll need to flush out and waste a bit. Ensure properly drained- replace drain nut.
You can then fill the FD via the ABS sensor- see tip above- a piece of paper to keep track of how many syringe-fulls you have put in is wise... (don't ask me how I know... !)

His name is Mohammed Bahousk and I am told he is well known for working on big bikes- His tel +216 9836 2457
His garage is located in La Soukra, on the outskirts of Tunis about 6kms from city ctr.
I would suggest you find somewhere to stay, relax then get busy on the phone Monday!
If you can't find him there, ask a policeman.

Bertrand your a star buddy. Thanks very much for all your help. Its very kind of you and I really appreciate it. I will be in tunis tonight and will get in contact with your man asap. I only noticed the oil leak this morning when loading bike onto ferry so I was kinda screwed. I will replace the seal if I can get one if not I guess ill have to keep emptying and refilling until I can get to the next bmw dealer which is in Cairo. Not so close.
Thanks again buddy
