pistes between morocco & algeria

I am planning a visit in Southern Morocco Northeastern Algerie and I wonder whether is possible to cross via piste from the piste-axis Tagounite-Taouz into Algeria? What should I expect? Cheers. Alberto

What should I expect?

Sadly, what you can expect is land mines and a whole ot of aggro when the military of either country find you - especially since Casablanca.

Dear Chris,

I would like to wish you the very best of luck in the New Year!!!

Thank you very much for your swift reply!!!

I am planning other trips in the Sahara and I would like to ask if you could let me know how long should it take to do the Tenere Loop route, with a local guide in his own car, reuturning to Agadez via Temet and Arakao? How much should I expect to pay for the guide on my own? I have also been thinking to hire Abdou Borgi, the Touareg Guide advertising in your Sahara Overland book: how are his rates compared to those of a local guide? Does he know the areas he specialises is well?

Congratulations on your great work and website!!!

Best,

Alberto

Hi Alberto

..... how long should it take to do the Tenere Loop route, with a local guide in his own car, reuturning to Agadez via Temet and Arakao?

2 weeks minimum. It's a great trip. See
http://www.sahara-overland.com/Sfiles/tenere.htm
if you have not already

How much should I expect to pay for the guide on my own?

Dont know the latest price, about 50 euros a day?? But they may not like 1 car only.

I have also been thinking to hire Abdou Borgi, the Touareg Guide advertising in your Sahara Overland book: how are his rates compared to those of a local guide?

Abdou is based in Djanet or Paris - so an Agadez guide would be much cheaper. I am sure people can recommend guides there. There are several agencies in town.

Does he know the areas he specialises is well?

He is more of an Algeria guy, I assume and would not bother with a single car but farm it out (I would guess).

Congratulations on your great work and website!!!

thanks, see you

For guides located in Agadez, I can recommend Touareg Tours, run by Aghali Alambo. No nonsense, very professional. He speaks French (and German, I believe) but no English.

Telephone: 00 22 744 10 13.

You must have a minimum of 2 4x4 vehicles to be allowed through the police checkpoints at Agadez and Chirfa to cross the Tenere. It's a matter of safety. Best to look for other travelers to hook up with. Most basic trips do it in 7-10 days, depending on how far north you cross. Pricey trip, expect at least $150 USD per day, per tourist, could be alot more. Lots of guides in Agadez. Lots of agencies. Look on the internet for more sites. You may pay a premium for a guide that speaks good English if you cannot speak French.
