ore train,mauretanie

Hi all!

I just saw the other day a documentary about mauretanie.where a guy got ride on the ore train, going to the coast.
He was in a so called 'first class',yes in a passanger car(some kind of sleaper,or something),while the others who wished to ride for free, wore in a 'second class'-on the iron ore,in cargo cars.

So,does passanger cars run regurarly or just sometimes ???

enjoy

I am quite sure that the passenger car runs with most or all of the trains. If you want to take a car, then not all trains have a flatbed wagon for cars. I travelled from Nouadibou to Choum in 'iron ore' class, in 1999, and had one memorable journey. -particularly when it rained on us and there was no cover. -we got wet, but it was worth it for the spectacular vista of the desert during the lightening/thunder storm during the night.

If you do travel iron ore class, make sure that you travel with some other people in your wagon, for security reasons. Remember not to take photographs of the train/station, unless you are sure that security/police are out of range.

There is one train per day which has a flatbed carraige to carry vehicles but don`t get caught photographing it! The first class carraige is the last carraige on the train and has some bunks in it.

We struggeled to get our 4x4 on the train at Ndb, "Come back tomorrow!", etc. And there were no flatbeds, and little tourists in Oct 2002. If you have a 4x4, just drive to Choum. It's pretty straight forward and should at most take 2 days.

If you're in a passenger car, latch on to some 4x4's that stay overnight in the camping at Ndb.
