Nothern Algeria

Hello
Did anyone get in Algeria (north) without guide with motorbike?? Are there any troubles with local authorities or police without guide???
The practical experience is needed.

Algerian visa in Cairo

On a similar theme, any info on getting an Algerian visa in Cairo? Would it be easier in Tunis? The official line here at the Algerian embassy in Cairo is I have to apply to London, the nearest embassy to my home - Ireland! :confused1:
Thanks.

We entered Algeria from Tunisia at Tabarka - El Kala without a guide two and a half years ago. Had no problems in the north not having a guide. You only need a guide if you go south of a certain line - we drove down the trans-saharan highway as far south as El Golea before police started asking where our guide was. I guess anywhere north of that you're fine without one.

We were in two vehicles with French plates, if that matters - I don't think it does though.

That said, you have to be really careful being on your own in the north. When you park your bike make sure you can really trust the people you leave it with. Somebody tried to break into one of our cars in Algiers - that was at a paid parking lot in the city centre.

I dont think it is so easy now in the north. Things have become more tense there in the last year due to bombings. They were even asking for guides at the airport which they did not do in 2005/6.

I know one traveller who got through from Taleb Larbi (Tuni) to Algiers lst year but I think even he agreed he was lucky, he did not linger and was using buses (less conspicuous).
