Niger Visas

Hi I will be travelling to Niger Via Morocco, mauritania,Mali and burkina faso, Just wondering if anyone knows were i can pick up visas along the road?????and cost/time taken
Thanks

I travelled to Niger in 2002, from Mali, and research at the time indicates that there are no Niger consulates which issue visas over the Morocco/Mauri/Senegal/The Gambia/Mali route. The Niger consulates in West Africa are in 'southern' West Africa -eg Nigeria. Yes this does make it awkward to get the visas en-route. I obtained my Niger visa in Germany before I went to West Africa. I wouldn't bank on getting a visa at the Mali/Niger border either..

Times do change however, and maybe one day a Niger consulate will open in Bamako one day !!! Heres hoping !

In March 2001 I got a visa for Niger from the consulate/embassy in Rabat. Be careful of course as it may not be there anymore...

They had the address at the camping in Sale and it was near the Nigeria embassy. Also I believe there's a Niger embassy in Benin.

From what I've read on this bb and elsewhere, the majority of the visas necessary can be obtained from the neighbouring country, before you get to the border; and for less than in Europe.
Are there any countries in the trans africa route for which this is not the case?
Ok I understand that it obliges one to go to the relevant capital, with all the risks that involves (theft, mad drivers etc...) but as visas are generally for a limited time and the objective of the trip is not to be held to a timetable, I'm hoping it can all be done on the way.

Luke, While it is often the case that you can get the required visa from the country next to the country you wish to visit, this is not always the case. Ian may be correct in saying that the Niger visa can be obtained in Rabat, but I am certain that the Niger visa could NOT be obtained in Mali (or in Senegal or Mauritania) in 2001 for example.

Planning a journey across parts of Africa does need research to find out where visas are available from, and that is the value in forums like this, where very recent information can be obtained from fellow travellers.

I have read that Niger visas can be obtained in Tamanrasset, is this still true?

Hi again,
Thanks for all the info, just wondering if anyone has obtained a visa for Niger in Rabat recently (in the last 6 months to a year)
thanks
Bo
