NDB - ATAR - TIDJIKJA
 

We are planning to do the route Nouadhibou - Atar - Tidjikja in a well prepared Pajero in the last week of January 2006. I have few questions:
1) Is this route possible with one car, good waypoints and a GPS?
2) If not: is it easy to meet up with other travellers who do the same?
3) Is there an easy way/piste from Tidjikja to the main road from NKT to Ayoun? We have no time to go as far as Nema by taking the piste from Tidjikja.

1) Yes. Any route is possible with only one car. The problem is the risk involved in case something goes wrong;
2) Yes, if you have the time to spare (couple of days?);

even with GPS points. navigation is still difficult on that route. youll be amazed how many tracks are around,and valleys to cross at critical points.

and as chris says 2 cars will make you feel secure, why go on a trip and not feel secure? it will spoil it. youre bound to have a few problems = anxiety enough, but with one vehicle it becomes much more anxious.(IMHO)

Ive gone Tidjika to Nema alone on a bike and almost perished in 1997.

there is no vehicle reliable enough to put your life on. but 2 vehicle provides an incredible increase in security. plenty of vehicles do that route, but it might be easier to meet them in NK first.

If you pass along camping Bab Sahara in Atar you'll probably find somebody who's going that way. Owner Just can find you a guide. But he won't make an afford to do so if you're planning to go with only one vehicle. And I think he's right, because there's very few traffic on the road (we did not meet any vehicle in the two days that we went from Tidjikja to Chinguetty). The road from Tidjikja to Sangrafe (on the route d'espoir) is (almost) tarred. NKT - Atar is far more easy than Atar - Tidjikja and orientation is easy because of the railway. The piste from Choum to Atar is clear and except from a few kilomtres `tole ondule' easy going.
