Muammar Gheddafi strikes again: no European tourism allowed in Lybia anymore

News from today's headlines here in Italy:

Libya suspends entry visas for EU - airport source | World | Reuters

tommysmithfromleeds 15 Feb 2010 13:24

no visas except for britain it says, although that does make perfect sense :rolleyes2:

Knight of the Holy Graal 15 Feb 2010 13:31

Yes, British are exempt, but I have a friend that is setting up the Mediterranean Loop: he had to leave home in southern Italy bound to Tunisia then Lybia, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Turkey and the Balcans then back to southern Italy.
He was supposed to leave in two weeks and had already applied for the Lybian visa, but this unexpected event "destroys" his trip.

Well done, Mr. Gheddafi...

Shame that. Its horrible how an entire country can be shut off, especially Libya. Although i have never been to North Africa but I have seen documentaries that show how beautiful and unique the country is. Cant your mate go down Greece and cross to Egypt?

Hey, Tommy.
Yes, it's what he'll do in case the situation won't evolve positively, he just wrote it on the Italian message board we are members of.

But you are right: it's a shame.

Having been working in Libya recently, I would be never be surprised by anything the good Colonel does. He truly is a law unto himself...

andrasz 16 Feb 2010 02:43

With this and recent hassles with the permits in Egypt, about the only place left to go in peace to the Sahara are the Canary Islands... :rolleyes2:

Gadaffi's thrown his toys out of the cot...

BBC News - EU deplores Libya visa ban for Europeans

And these people want to be readmitted to the international fold?

priffe 21 Feb 2010 22:59

Perhaps it can be resolved rather quickly (weeks? months?)

EU-Libya meeting planned to discuss visa row (Magharebia.com)
A meeting between Swiss and Libyan diplomats is in the works to smooth over a recent quarrel over travel restrictions.
"In a statement to Magharebia, former Tunisian ambassador and Maghreb relations expert Ahmed Wanis said: "It seems that Libya, in taking that latest resolution, gave the principle of sovereignty precedence over interests.""

Richard Washington 22 Feb 2010 09:26

Libya has asked that Max Goeldi, a Swiss national, who is hiding the the Swiss embassy in Tripoli, hand himself over to serve his 4 month jail sentence. Libya says he has till noon 22 Feb. Authorities are surrounding the embassy.

This is really incredible...

Sounds like the clock is being turned back....

priffe 26 Feb 2010 12:57

Q is taking personal grievances to a new level.

Guess we won't be visiting Libya anytime soon.

He reminds me of a kid with Tourettes. He tries to behave well and do the right thing, but every once in a while it all gets too much and he has an outburst.

I read a book of some scientists suggesting he's suffering from borderline syndrome. I hear his son Seif is trying to make him behave, but he clearly is not always succesfull.

Careful Chris if his boys read that they'll declare a jihad on you :tank:

steveindenmark 27 Feb 2010 07:34

But why would the Swiss put him on a list to ban him?

Do they really expect him to apply for a visa to visit them?

I agree with Gadaffis policies though. Wouldn`t it be wonderful if Gordon Brown just put a carpet ban on everyone visiting England and then get round to kicking all those out who shouldn`t be there.

I might even come back from Denmark then.

Steve

I hear some agencies are still able to provide tourist-visa at the border. I wonder what the recent developments mean for the Libya Dessert Challenge scheduled for march? Is the Libyan agency organising the event powerfull enough to open the border for the participants?

Sam Rutherford 8 Mar 2010 10:46

Short answer is no.

Safe travels, Sam.

PS I am looking forward to 2 weeks in the Ubari-Akakus with not another soul anywhere - fantastic! :oops2:

Sam.

He doesn't get any better - now he's called for the Partition of Nigeria!

Sam Rutherford 20 Mar 2010 17:17

there's nobody here...

12 days in SW, met 2 kiwis. That's it.

Lots of really worried/unhappy guides/mechanics/restaurants/hotels etc. etc. Particularly as the season is now finishing anyway.

Sabratha this morning - nobody there, not even the guy on the gate for tickets. Leptis tomorrow...

Hope it sorts itself out soon, it's a great shame for the country.

Sam.

nickt 27 Mar 2010 02:18

Ooo. Thanks Sam, I'll get that trip organized for later this year.

Solitude is underrated!

Nick.

To Saif, nothing illustrates the divide with the West more starkly than Libya's bizarre feud with Switzerland. It began when Gaddafi's son (and Saif's half brother) Hannibal and his wife were arrested in July 2008 in Geneva for allegedly assaulting their servants. Charges were dropped, but in the tit-for-tat battle that has run ever since, a Swiss businessman has been jailed in Tripoli, Libya has pulled billions from Swiss banks, and Switzerland has barred Gaddafi and other top Libyans from entering its country. In January, Libya blocked access to YouTube and several websites run by Libyan exiles, and in February it stopped handing out visas to most European citizens. When I visited Libya's biggest gas-export facility in February, the Italian manager was stuck in Rome, with no visa to return to work. To all this, Saif sighs, clearly exasperated. "There is a big gap between ... our mentality and the Western mentality," he says. "I think we are not ready to deal in the right way with the Western world." Not yet
