I was wondering if french will need a visa to enter Mauritania. If yes where could I get it knowing that I will be going overland to Mauritania from Bamako via Senegal?

Try to get it in Bamako, the last time I tried it cost about 14,000CFA for a month and took one day.

The latest info I have on the visa in Dakar (five weeks ago) is a three day costs CFA27,000, a week (or 10 days orr a month ???) costs CFA70,000. It may be possible to get it in Rosso, but I wouldn`t bet on it. I will pass Rosso in two or three weeks and will ask if it is possible to get it there.
