Maroc

Hi, I'm heading for Maroc 5 Oct 2005, anyone going the same way, figured it might be better to be mob handed travelling through the RIF.

I've been through the Rif a few times, once with my wife in 1974, the latest time was this May with three other bikers. From Bab Beret (aka Bab Berred) to Ketama is particularly lawless. No sign of the friendly Moroccan police, more like wild west frontier towns. The roads aren't well maintained, there's better mountains further south and the next time I go I will avoid the Rif totally.

I'll be there first week in October. I'm a rank novice at this travelling so if anyone fancies joining up just send me a mail.

Cheers

I'm off to Maroc first week in Oct 2005 too. 3 weeks duration. Trying to squeeze a bit of surfing in too. I'm riding a DR350 with soft luggage. 1st Big trip on bike so should be fun. Any advice? Places must see/avoid?

Find time to go to the cascades de Ouzud see link and the towns of Essouarria and Ashilia are fantastic. Avoid the Rif I dont know it but have heard miserable reports.http://groups.msn.com/UKTenereOwners...aharatrip.msnw

Well now. The Riff is not so bad. Squalid at times, but that comes with poverty. I found the people to be very kind and very helpful. Sure, there is a lot of hustle, but again, most of us lot are fabulously wealthy in comparison to the locals, so why shouldn't they think to make a buck or two off us?

Anyway, I have a journal that might be useful to those of you who are going for the first time. If you guys want it let me know and I'll email it to you. Clear out your mailboxes first as it comes in 3 big pdf files. Use michael_shulver@mailblocks.com to get in touch (when you first use this email you have to go through a relatively painless anti spam thing).

Sorry for the late reply. Been very busy .Thanks for the advice guys. Just putting the finishing touches to my planning. Been off getting last minute items for medical kit and some better tyre levers. Will be very wary in the Rif but still have an open mind. Bon Voyage to you all.

Baz lets us know how you get on, due to Algerian guide costs will be going this way in Nov, heading for West Africa

I would stick to the Atlantic coast and avoid the rif- do it on the way back if you must once you have got used to Morocco. The whole country is fantastic, each area has its own charm and each can be very different. To start in the Rif may put you off this great country.
Have a great trip..

Bab Berred

"Beware for little citiy Bab Beret direction Fez and Marakesz, local criminals ale dangerous."

hello forum! happy new year

ok, this is a old thread, but anyway...

Bab Berred, is between Chefchauen and Ketama, not Fez&Marakesh

I travelled 5 times through Morocco, each time for several weeks, I spend weeks in the Rif, yes it is a strange place, but please "criminals & dangerous" no way!
these people are normal farmers who want to sell their dope (I dont smoke and dont buy), people in Bab Berred are friendly, same as everywhere in Morocco. they try hard to sell, they bother you, but they are not criminals.
and I spend many weeks there, living with them, visiting them, sleeping with them, working with them.
and! Bab Berred has the best fresh sardines in Morocco, try them.
