Lybia with private cars

Do we need an all-time guide to travel Lybia through the tar roads? Is it dangerous? Can we ride in a free way? I am a beginner and i´ve visited the Morocco and Ocidental Sahara for 2 times, but this time i want to go to Lybia and i have already sold my 4X4. So i have just a simple car. can anyone please make some suggestions?

From what we hear it appears you do need guides even for the tar road - but at the border some people get away with it.
Libya has become a pain for independent travellers.

You must go expecting it and hope to get lucky

Thank you very much. I suppose i also shouldn´t go to Algeria, am i right? I´m trying to know a few north african countries at first, so that i can make some more adventurous trips there, after.

Showing up at the border and hoping for the best could imply that you end up having to take a guide at high cost I would think. All fair and well if you can subsequently ditch the guy still the same day. I hear that there's very ubiquitous checks by the police so it may be quite a pain travelling without a guide. Or am I wrong?

Does anyone know of agencies that offer reasonable guides at reasonable prices, say eur 30/day?

Anyone interested to team up for approx. three weeks in Feb, drop me a line,

Camiel

Go to Morocco mate, if you havent already. Its just down the road, a good intro and fun.
After that I'd go to Mori from your end as Alg (via Tunisia to be on the safe side) is a bit of a trek.

Two years ago we used a guide to visit Lybia, the cost whas 40USD per day. The minimum number of people was 4 persons. We booked our guide through the internet, no hassles, took us 30 minutes to cross the border Tunesia->Lybia.
We crossed numberous police check-points. The guide became very usefull. Allso the paperwork and so (registration within 7 days, permit to enter the Akakus...) was done by our guide... It was easy.
If you speak arabic you'll have no problem to do it on your own... if you don't, you'd better consider the guide IMHO.
Greetings
M.
