Libya - Guides still Manditory?

Does anyone know DEFINITIVELY whether guides are essential (legal necessity?) or just advised when travelling in Libya. I'm going at the end of December, and expect to pick up LOCAL guides at Germa (for Wadi Mathendous and Ubari), and at Ghat (for the Acacus). Other than that, we'll be donig the coast for the Greek & Roman cities, and I can't see the need for a permanent guide for the non desert parts of the trip. If I get get away without guides I'd be very happy. Any info gratefully received.

The guide in The jamahiriyah is now mandatory since years all along the trip, doesn't matter if it is coast or Sahara.

Recently travelling in the Akakus has been remmitted only trough local T.O.'s cars and this for tourist's safety and archaeological site's sageguard .

Above is the regulation that You can also chek with the Tourism Board Office here in Tripoli.

You can travel without guide, by leaving him for example at a petrolstation while he's having a pee. As some Germans did lately, look for a certain Ferdi at the forum. I had the impression their agency, Arkno, did not really mind. Especially when you pay for the guide in advance.

This a convincing expplanation , but the police's control didn't also really mind.
