Hidden Morocco trip: Sep/Oct 2007

There's a lot of out-of-the-way places I would like to visit in Morocco (hence the trip name), and I'm planning an extended trip on my 1200 GS Adventure, entering via the Almería-Melilla overnight ferry around Sep 25-26 and travelling around Morocco until Oct 18, then on to the Moto Andalucia meet in Spain Oct 19-21.

Many of the places can only be reached by pistes and I am planning to wild camp for about half the time. Ramadan will be on most of the trip (finishes Oct 11).

If anyone will be in Morocco at the same time and is interested in meeting up for a couple of days please PM me. Some of my past trip reports:

Stairway to Heaven and other innovative desert structures
Sleeping beside the bike in a Moroccan river bed
'A piste too far' trip
Carry on Dakar
Marrakech Express - write-up and pics

Hey Tim - I'll be in Morocco for a month from a week Monday - http://journeytomorocco.com - I'm coming back Sept 27th though so we may just meet on the ferry!

Hi Matt

Have a great time, if you're there for a month you'll undoubtedly discover some brilliant places to visit.

Yep I'll be crossing on approx the 24th on the same Ferry. I'll be heading almost due south over the Plateaux, down to Merzouga and then west and south as far as Smara before turning and heading home north. Hoping to be in Morocco for around 2 to 3 weeks. Possibly heading home as late as the 17th if I have to. Whats the score travelling around Ramadan time? I've spent a lot of time in Morocco in recent years but have always avoided it. At least it gets dark a bit earlier at that time of the year....I'm guessing food is going to be hard to come by pre-cooked during the day.....

Hi David

Many of the cafes and restaurants are closed throughout daylight hours during Ramadan. Those that are open will happily serve non muslims, pregnant women, children, etc., though personally I try to avoid eating in front of people.

Most food shops are still open selling bread, laughing cow cheese, tomatoes. Make sure you have a day's supply of water.

The first meal after sunset is what we would normally have for breakfast, which won't impress you at all if you are expecting an evening meal. After their breakfast people tend to stay up late and have a 'lunch' late at night, then have another meal before dawn.

I'm probably taking a convoluted route from Melilla, going Saidia, Oujda, the Gorges of Zegzel, the Grottes du Chiker and across to the Middle Atlas. Then possibly Mousa de Salah, back to the Rekkam Plateau, across country to visit some Foreign Legion forts, Jbel Marzimine, then up to Midelt.
