GPS accuracy

Hi,

Something to bare in mind when using GPS is that in case of war the accuracy for civil use may be set back to the early days.

This is not a real problem as 100 - 200 meters still is very sufficient in the desert and one should never rely on GPS alone. But it can be usefull to realize.

Generally they only degrade (or fully encrypt) the signal in the required area. So the GPS reception quality in the Sahara (with the possible exception of the easternmost part) SHOULD remain unaffected.

We lost reception completely here in Egypt for 6 hours during the launch of the Afghan war. But what most people didn’t realize that satellite phones service also was severely degraded and you could hardly get a connection for days. I found that first hand since I was with a bunch of journalists at one of Rally of Egypt camps that year and I couldn’t make a call using Global Star, Thuraya, or Inmarsat. The Taliban warlords relied heavily of sat phone for their communications since they had little telecom infrastructure.
