ferry aqaba to nuweiba

We are planning on going into egypt next march, has anyone taken a vehcile across on the ferry, I`ve done it as a foot passenger a couple of years ago, but I`m interested in the price of takeing a landrover and if it`s worth booking in advance or just turn up and hope for the best. Going through israel is`nt a option as we are plannig on working in the middle east and dont want to jepadise our jobs.
thanks

A couple of friends of mine tried to take a vehicle through Egypt a while back and found that they had hassles at the border and ended up returning to Jordan.

Good luck and have fun though!

Jon thanks for the reply, we`re pretty keen on getting into egypt, if we can get the ferry and not go overland we should be right, the hastle with the paperwork will be a warm up for the saudi border. Thanks

Do you know by any chance if the Egyptian visa (regular visa valid for *all* of Egypt) can be obtained in Nuweiba or would it be wiser to get the visa ahead of time ?

I've done it the other way. 4 years ago I just turned up and $100 got me and the Land Rover onto the ferry. Whilst waiting for it I had the cahnce of a swim with the dolfins up the road.Beware the hideous taxes they impose on a vehicle at the border. I seem to remember it cost be a bout £200 to get the Land Rover in. Worth every penny though. You may also find that you HAVE TO have a carnet.

Thanks gregor, with the way things are going I`m starting to think ferries are going to be the least of our problems.

You mentioned the Saudi border. I crossed this last year from Jordan whilst returning to the UAE. It wasn't really a hassle, but they can be VERY thorough with their vehicle search. The best thing is to not react when they search. They often do something outrageous (for example the customs officer took my tent out of its bag, laid it flat on the floor and stomped all over it to see if anything was inside!) to try and provoke an angry outburst. Then, if they get a reaction, they start taking the panels off the car to search it thoroughly.

The best best is to be polite and open and above all else have nothing they are interested it!

If you want to know more, E-Mail me at editor@mid-east-off-road.com

Atthe Egyptian border, you will no doubt be asked for all manner of 'fees' and 'taxes'. Politely but firmly ask for a receipt! I'll try and find out more for you.

Good luck!

Thanks Jon at the moment thats starting to look like the easier part, our main problem is these terrorists, I an aircraft engineer, and since the 11th of september my job in the UAE is now in doubt, we are stopping over there for 4 days on our way to OZ for xmas to try to sort things out, but until then who knows, it would be easier to get a straight answer from the taliban.
Thanks for the info.
