Eyes of Africa
Besides the well known Richat structure there are other 'eyes' deserving to be visited.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richat_Structure https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...TER_Richat.jpg The Richat structure is a geological formation but the Tenomour crater east of Zouerat is now believed to be an impact crater 24°15’ N 9° 39’ W https://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2003/pdf/1183.pdf https://www.learner.org/wp-content/u...ia-fig6031.jpg Further north east there is the Temimichat crater. If you want to go someplace really remote. 24°15’ N 9° 39’ W https://www.researchgate.net/figure/...fig1_241511135 It is not well researched for being so remote. https://www.researchgate.net/profile...ly-visible.png Then there is the more accessible Aouelloul crater southeast of Atar at 20°14'28.0"N 12°40'30.0"W https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aouelloul_crater https://www.researchgate.net/publica...NASA-image.png Interestingly these structures line up, at least the three northerly ones suggesting they may have originated from the same impact event. http://labmpg.sscc.ru/acraters_n143sh1.jpghttp://www.b14643.de/Mauritania-Craters/Map.jpg https://www.researchgate.net/profile...e-believed.png But geological evidence says not, and the Richat is no longer considered an impact crater. These large structures are spectacular seen from above, but may not be that interesting from ground level unless you have geological training and know your stones. The Richat perhaps the most interesting with many stone age artifacts and gabbros. There is much research to be done and there is a lot of speculation among scientists Are the so-called impact craters in Mauritania kimberlite pipes ? |
