Nonsense, go there because its worth while, just avoid the busy periods. When we were there, there were only few people. Great place for pictures

I learnt this from 2 different riders both born in Africa, who are far better riders and far more experienced in sand than me. I trust them.

When i say ride along the crest at an angle thats so you can see over the edge and assess if its very steep and how big a drop it is, rather than take a blind leap of faith and risk hurting yourself.

If you stop just before the very top of a big dune like Erg Chebbi where the sand is very soft you'll more than likely get stuck. If you intend to ride down but want to stop for photos its best to stop with the front wheel on one side of the crest, bash plate on the crest and the rear wheel on the other side of the crest if that makes sense.

Personally I love the dunes, stunning scenery especially at dawn and dusk.
