Entering Egypt

We're planning to transit Egypt at the end of this year and have heard that 4WDs require clearance from the Ministry of Defence/Military Intelligence Bureau. Is this right? Do you get clearance at the border (we're entering from Libya) or do you have to get it in advance?

Is it right that the restrictions on diesel cars have now gone?

Also, we plan to take the ferry to Wadi Halfa. Can you get tickets somewhere before Aswan? Grateful for any tips

Have gone back over the past year and can't find anything on the questions raised (though lots on Wadi Halfa and the general difficulties of Egypt). Can you give me any more details of when they were covered?

I dont *think* you need to get it in advance. Mail the guys at www.exfoleyation.co.uk - they've just come through here via Libya.

Restrictions on diesel vehicles are now gone. Diesel here is cheap as chips - this morning it is 7p a litre (I dont want to KNOW how much it is at home....!)

I dont know about the Wadi Halfa ferry, but Ill try to find out and get back to you

I've seen some reports on this forum about a LE 3000 tax that you have to pay at customs when entering the country with a 4x4, this is true if you come from Libya, but fortunately this is not the case if you come from Sudan! When we entered at Aswan 3 days ago we had to pay the 'old' amount of LE 1022.

Still too much but well he.... you should always expect the worst in Egypt

The LE tax 3002 is for cars with two liter's engines and up, 1100 for lesser and bikes wherever the entrance.

we just entered egypt two days ago in an isuzu trooper 2.8 turbo diesel from jordan via ferry, and had to pay the 1000 odd egyptian pounds tax alongosde a few other minor fees. i don't know if this was becasue they didn't clock on that it was over two litres or what.

however we are know stuck in cairo waiting on sudanese visas!

the ferry from aqaba was the 'fast boat' and cost a hundred dollars or so.

the expected hassle at customs but nothing major.

hope it helps

We are driving a 3.5L V8... and paid LE 1022!
It is just a matter of which border you are taking. Aswan is cheap and apparently Nuweiba as well. Coming in from Libya is the only border they charge you LE 3000

Thanks everyone for the information - very useful.

dear Garner
for the border crossing from libya to Egypt it is getting easier, (we can offer you assistance here as at the ferryboat from Aswan to Wadi Halfa). For that reason we have opened up an info office in Cairo, for help in Egypt, Sudan and Libya. So if you need any assistance, booking or reservation you are most welcome
