EGIPT - permission for "off beaten tracks"
 

Hi.

Is it hard to get a permit for desert driving in Egypt? I plan to go there in next spring and i'm going to spend few days on the Western (Libyan) Desert.

If anyone cold help me i will be very thankfull.

Take a look on the map of the western desert. As a general rule any place West of the main oasis road will need a permit. Anything on the East of the road (still west of the Nile) can be explored without permits.

The permits can be obtained from the border police office in Cairo. Since you’re a foreigner you might need a permit from the tourism police as well. These can take up to 10 days. Your guide should be able to get all these permits ready by the time you arrive.
