Thanks Chris, that is very helpful! The link is informative and it answers several of my questions.
- The main piste looks too sandy for bicycles but the space between the tracks might be ridable. Back in 1995 in Northern Sudan I followed the railway tracks between Port Sudan and Atbara in the Nile Valley. Not easy, but the only way through.
-There is water along the way in at least 4 places. I can probably carry 2/3 days worth of water (15 to 20 litres).
My other concerns are safety along the way (one is way more vulnerable in the saddle than behind the wheel) and the Mauritanian authorities who could object to my wandering off the main tarmac road...

Chris, I am now cycling down Morocco and will be in Mauri in November. I am still considering riding along the railway tracks. All the info you had given me/us about that piste (mileage, distances between settlements, water...à seems to have disappeared. Could you post it once more please ? Thanks.
