condition of road between Baharyah and Siwa ?

Who could tell me of the usual condition of the road between the two Egyptian oases of Baharyah and Siwa ? I want to drive from Baharyah to Siwa in about ten days from now .
Thanks.

Marc,

If you’re asking about the condition of the road itself then it’s not that good. It’s basically very poorly done tarmac with no maintenance. I drive along this route a lot and I find myself driving on the sand right next to it a lot. 2 spares are a good idea if you’re in a car. If you’re on bike than make sure you have a repair kit. Having said that it’s a beautiful road. One of my favorites in Egypt actually.

You will need to get permits to go from Bahariya to Siwa. These can take a few days so better start working on them quickly. If you’re traveling the other way around (Siwa- Bahariya) then all you need to do is register with the police in Siwa. However rules change without notice so you better check.

There are 5 or so check points on the way and they’ll check your papers/permits at every one of them but they won’t keep you long.

Hope this helps
