Carnet and Visa for Mauritania

I'm confused with the visa/carnet requirments for Mauritania. I plan to travel through Maroc, Western Sahara into Mauritania around Jan/Feb 2007. I'm a British Citizen riding a uk bike. Do I need a carnet? (the RAC told me it's advisable, whatever that means) and can I obtain a visa in Rabat or Cassablanca? Or on the border going into Mauri?
Any info will be appreciated
thanks

Hi, no need for a Carnet in Mauritania.
I believe you need a visa (I'm portuguese and need one). Dont know where you can get it in Morocco.

Kev

we are planning of going to Mauri via W.Sahara late Dec/earl jan. and having searched through the HUBB I think you can buy one on the border for EURO 20.00 otherwise you can play safe and go to the Mauritanian embassy in London (W1) for a 3 month multi entry visa for GBP 42.00

Mauri Visa

Hey Kev,

I'm busy researching this myself.
I am going to get green card insurance on entry (I don't have a carnet), and just sussing out the visa situation.
UK Foreign office says:
"All visitors except nationals of Italy require visas. These can be obtained from the Mauritanian Embassy in London."

Apparantly the visa can also be obtained in Casablanca... but I am yet to confirm if this is the case.

Watch this space...

Some more searching unearthed info updated on 2006.11.14, by TrioTours:

Quote:

The Mauritanian consulate in Casablanca issues visas to all nationalities. Note that the embassy in Rabat no longer has a consular section and does not issue visas.

You will find the Mauritanian consulate at 382 route d'El Jadida, in the Quartier Beau Sejour. The opening hours of the consulate are: Monday to Friday from 8.30 AM until 3 PM, Friday from 8.30 AM until noon. You can call the consulate at 02 223 73 73.

The visa costs 200 dirham (US$ 20). You will need to bring two passport sized photographs. If you file your application before 9 AM, you should be able to pick up the visa after 1 PM the same day.

...It is also possible to get your visa on the border between Morocco and Mauritania at Nouadhibou. This is much more expensive, US$ 45.
If in doubt, give the Mauritanian embassy in London a call.

You can buy the visa at the border , on the spot for about 20-30 EUR.

You dont need a carnet in Mauritania , and even if you got one , is NOT advisable to use it at all.

as you enter Mauritania via Western Sahara, you can buy insurance , reasonably priced in Nouadibou (40 km from the border )

Enjoy your trip
Javier
