Cairo airport customs help - for motorcycle air shipped in
 

I am planning on air shipping my motorcycle (F800GSA BMW-USA registered) from London to Cairo.
I've heard the horror stories of the costs (and hassles) at Egypt customs, airport, etc running up to very high levels.

I'm looking for a good contact that can get me rolling down the road with the lowest costs and modest hassles.

Would you recommend shipping into Addis Ababa (from London) then?

The Sudan visa is a special pain for USA passport holders and I've had one failed attempt to get one out of Washington DC. Also, I believe I can get a USA registered bike from Ethiopia to South Africa without a Carnet if I skip Egypt and Sudan?

My experiences were from nearly 18 years ago, so hopefully you'll get more recent experiences from others.

The customs procedure into Ethiopia at Addis Ababa airport was very reasonable, quick and cheap.. The reason I had to airfreight from Cairo to Addis was because the Sudanese refused my visa request 3 times. I was on a British passport.

If you can avoid using a carnet it removes quite some hassle and expense.
