Buying dollars in Egypt
 

Hi. I need to buy a pile of USD here in Egypt to use when I cross into Sudan in a few weeks time. I hear there are no ATMs in Sudan and that this is the oniy way to have funds there. (?) Can anybody tell me the best way to accomplish this? Banks don't seem to sell dollars and the chance of getting fake dollars is high apparently.

There are ATMs in Sudan, but unfortunately they don't accept 'western' bank cards due to economic sanctions against the country. As a result nearly all 'western' banks are paranoid about getting involved with any financial transactions to do with Sudan.

It's worth noting that 'western' credit cards are also useless in Sudan, payments will not be accepted or go through.

You might get lucky and meet somebody who has a business in another country who might be able to help you by giving you USD on the ground, though it's not worth relying on this option!

I too have got USD from Western Union in Egypt when heading to Sudan but I had to insist upon it, they wanted to give me Egyptian Pounds.
