Bilma to Djanet

I'm aware that there is a group of Germans who are currently being held hostage in Algeria. I'm also aware that there has been widespread terrorism in Algeria for a number of years and that the British Foreign Office is advising against non-essential travel there. Algeria is a big country though; does anyone know exactly whereabouts in Algeria the trouble spots are?
Specifically, a small group (four) of us are thinking of flying into Tamanrasset and spending about four days in Southern Algeria travelling down through the Hoggar Moutains to the border with Niger. We'll organise guides and vehicles in advance to take us from Tamanrasset to the border and guides to meet us on the Niger side and take us into the Tenere Desert and from Bilma to Djanet, from where we're planning to fly back. Has anyone done anything similar in the region or travelled there recently (specially between Bilma and Djanet)?

Sounds like a good plan but I think you may find these border changeovers tricky and expensive to organise (see what local agencies say).
It would be easier/more conventional to fly Agadez first, do a Tenere loop and then hop over Ag to Tam and do a Tam-Djanet loop - both great trips.
Or, just take regular transportation from Tam to Agadez (guide + car is a bit extravagent for this section), do the Tenere and try to work out the changeover to Djanet - then do Djanet-Tam (via Hoggar, etc).
Algeria is no longer percieved as safe, but this was a single unprecedented (tho, as yet, unresolved) event. Unless something changes for the worse the proposed itinerary would be OK.

Hi - why not take only one guide from Tam to Niger and then back to Djanet?
I know two brothers (Algerians/Nigerians)- one living in Tam the other in Agadez. I did this trip (3 weeks) with the one in Tam.
Please mail direct for the adress
