best route Mauri to Mali

Hi there,

I am for the moment in Mauretanie and I am going to Mali.
A traveler told me that nowadays the route from Kiffa to Kayes is very good, because there are building something there.
Can anyone confirm this?
Or is the Nema to Nara road better?

Thanx
Dries

Last yyear we went Kaedi, Mbout Kankossa to Kayes. Good to Mbout but very difficult from Mbout to Kankossa ( even in a 101, good fun though). The route after we joined the Kiffa Kayes piste was ok for a Landrover in the dry season. You should not attempt it in the wet though as parts of the route merely drive down the dry river bed. Piste after Kankossa was better though you still need a Landrover and it is a bit difficult to follow at times. The chap who runs the pumping station in Kankossa gave us a shower and fresh water, say hello if you go that way. In short the way we went is only for the adventurous with a Landrover (preferably two) and time.

There has been a recent posting about a route between Selibabi and Kayes that sounds good.

There's a new tarred road from Yelemane to Kayes. It's not yet on the Michelin-map. There's hard work beeing done on surfacing a new road from Bamako to Kayes. For the moment it's still difficult travelling between these towns, because you have to go to Nioro. From Nioro the best way to get to Kayes is the northern route passing quite close to the Mauritanian border to Yelemane through the village of Kerserin
