Atlantic Route - Guided??

Hi,
I'm going to Timbuktu via the Atlantic route next week. Was wondering if the route description and way points in Sahara Overland are still useable (route R1). I'll be in a group with at least one other well prepped (if a bit aged) 4x4. We'd much prefer to go un-guided.....any thoughts or recomendations??

Never say guided. Or wash your mouth out.

I'm sure you can manage it, esp with 4x4 and the right attitude. Guides out there are not always helpful.
btw, I take it you know there is a new sealed road to the east now (not shown on all maps).

I'm heading down that way as well next week, solo on a yellow CCM 600, also aiming at Timbuktoo (should have been tomorrow but I have to clear my desk first!). What are you driving / riding so I can keep an eye out for you.

Hi Chris, thanks for the reply.
Yeah, i'm aware of the new road, def want to keep off the black stuff wherever possible. It was the new road that prompted my question really. I know your book was published before it was completed, just wanted to be sure it hadn't affected the route discription or way points too much.

Backofbeyond - i'll keep an eye out for you, i reckon we'll sail to Ceuta on the 22nd. We'll be in what can only be described as a ropey looking Niva. Green, but getting browner, with one blue door.
(It is a lot better than it looks, honest.....10 months getting it ready, just not spent on looks!!)
