Algerian to Mali by Bidon V

Hello again:
Next August I'll try to cross Algeria quikly to pass Mali (Ghao) via Bidon V.
Last 2007 some friends made it whitout guide and whitout any problem.
I think August is the worst month to travel in sahara, but the best one for have no problems with police and militars.
I'm thinking enter Algeria from Oran, with an invitation of a local tuareg, justify my visit to know his family... then continue to Reganne, ask for the laissez for the militaries and continue the route for Bidon V, crossing to Mali at Bordj Mokhtar.
All visas taked from home. three 4x4, 6 person.
Well, my friend in August,2007 haven't any problem.
Do you think things could have considerably changed?

Thanks

Hi,

three 4x4, 6 persons is quite a big group. You might be stopped in Adrar Wilaya. The worst then is, that you need to find a guide adhoc.
Also consider, that northern Mali is pretty unsafe thees days, there had been several kidnappings this year.

Hello Ferdi, nice old pictures from the early 80s on that thread. I have a similar collection. They have a certain look - including long horizontal scratches which I know too well. The wrong sort of 'grainy' film.

I notice in 2009 you show tarmac at Bidon V, I presume all the way to BBM.
What is the extent of tarmac on the Tanezrouft between Reggane and BBM? GE is not much help beyond KM80.

thanks

Hi Chris,

in the north maybe 80 to 100 km are paved. The tarmac ends at the danger sign. In the south I dont't know exactly, because I drove off piste and met the road near the Bidon V. So maybe 150 to 200 km paved before BBM.

Greetings
Ferdi

Hi.
I contacted with one algerian agency (the one recomended in other post).
They said don't know it's possible to cross alone (without guide) up to Mali, buy guide rates are cheap and could be an option to eliminate control problems.
Otherwere, they said the problem will be in northern Mali :(, may be crossing to Niger, could it be better?

Au,
