OSM Map On Garmin not routable

I need some help.

I've followed the instructions in the forum for locating and downloading the free OSM maps. I've downloaded the Generic Routable version of a map of South America. I have installed it both on my PC and on my Garmin 62stc. I have enabled the OSM map on my Garmin.

However, I created a route between Cartagena, Colombia and Medellin, Colombia. When I try to calculate route in the 62 an error appears "Maps do not have routable routes in this area."

When I select the route in BaseCamp and select Recalculate, it does nothing. All I get is still a straight line between the two cities.

What am I missing? How do I enable the routable feature on these OSM maps?
Thank you for your help!

When I put in from Dresden to Zeebrugge on the final leg of my Balkans trip it happened to me. I thought it was because it was quite a long route to put in. To stop it from doing that I put in some way points in the direction I was going then added them into the Dresden to Zeebrugge route and it worked.
I ain't got a clue why it does it
Let me know if it works for you

I occasionally get route calculation errors using osm South America on my 60csx when I have wanted to navigate to a city I found when searching for it by name.

My work round is to create a waypoint at the destination eg a street corner in the city and navigate to that. Haven't had any errors doing it this way.

Haven't had the need to navigate in Colombia yet as I'm currently much further south.

HTH.

Get the same problem with OSM Europe maps when try to route very long trips. Often just approximates the routes with a series of straight lines. Same thing happens with OSMand on android.

Just keep the planning to sensible lengths or if you must plan across half the world, start off with the first stage a few hundred km, and then extend the route in steps.

Your advice of choosing shorter segments worked out. It is strange, sometimes going from city to city over a long distance works fine, and sometimes it does not.

So, I start with entering the beginning and destination city of a certain leg into the route. Then I test to see if it will route it. If not, I start adding other waypoints in the middle of the route until the system is actually able to get a real route calculated. Kind of a pain, but not too difficult of a work-around.

I guess I shouldn't complain. Keep perspective here. After all, I am sitting on my ass half a world away from a place I have never been, able to pull up high detail topo maps of a continent that I want to do a roadtrip to. Amazing that it can be done at all!

Problem now is how to go everywhere I want to go in the limited time I have to do it.

Thanks again for your help!

Just remember when you are creating way points from the start of your trip to the end, number all your waypoints in order, it makes it a lot easier to find were you need to be when you start your journey again the next day

With Garmin, adding waypoints for this purpose generally involved pointing to a spot on the screen and hitting Go, add to original route. Hardest part is to remember to avoid touching on the middle of towns unless you really want to go into the middle.

A similar issue happened to me. Eventually a very close look at the map that I had downloaded from OSM revealed I somehow had missed a very tiny tile of the whole area I was interested in. I honestly believed I had selected them all when creating the map but no, I missed that little one. Hence there was discontinuity in routing, and the error message. I redid the OSM map creation routine and took extra care not missing any tiny tile by zooming in big time, and haven't had any problem with it since then.
