Does anyone know any good bookstore in St.Petersburg where to get that mapbook Tony mentioned and expecially maps from Arkangel and Karelia area?

I am planning ride for next summer from Finland through Karelia to White Sea and then back going around Ääninen and Lagoda lake. I will most likely visit St.Petersburg during winter and having big papermap of that area would help putting for planning like where to find fuel etc and where are routes what people have driven.

I saw it the other day in Dom Knigi (Дом Книги) in Nevsky Prospect (Невский Проспект) opposite the Kazansky Cathedral . They are the biggest book shop in StPeter with a reasonable map/Atlas section. There may be more specialist map shops in StPeter - I don't know the place that well.

If you have your speakers on it 'says' the letter to you if you click on each line.

The road atlas also has a thumbnail at the bottom of each page with 'Roman' names of towns. A good way of checking your understanding of the Cyrilic alphabet.

I have at last recently found and looked at a copy of the atlas Colebatch prefers. In Moscow it's not widely available and costs 50% more than 'mine'.
It uses more colours but shows less topographical detail in some areas and many roads are shown more diagramatically (straighter) than 'my' one. Mind you, being Russia, neither may be accurate when you get there!!

It's all initial personal preference.

Given a choice, some guys initially go for blondes, or brunettes or redheads. Despite the difference, they all perform the same function and you quickly adapt to what's available!

I have now bought a quantity of 'my' atlas and sometime after 22nd I will be sending them out to all who have already asked for one via PM. I will confirm via PM at the time.

I can get further copies for sending from UK - probably sometime after April.

With three choices :w00t:, one could... well... ahhhh, ...never mind :innocent:

They never perform exactly the same function ... at least not with equal levels of performance.

Dont stop being discerning, just because you're approaching 70 my friend. :thumbup1:

They are going by 2nd Class post in the morning from London - except the ones for Genghis and Naval where I am using Air Mail Printed Paper rate.

If anyone asked and I have not included them above please contact me. Otherwise I have one more available if anyone wants and lets me know - quick as I am back to RUS on Friday. But I can bring more back to UK in May.

Tony, I think I mentioned to you that the map shop on Kuznetsky Most has closed. No great loss, but wanted to let you know.

A few weeks ago I went to the Dom Knigi on the Arbat, they have a pretty good selection of maps, probably the best I've seen.

That's a shame.
Although really unsuitable for my needs, it was one of the last of the old style shops from the pre-perestroika era. The people there were more concerned about their maps, and those interested in them, than sales/profit.

Sadly it will doubtlessly become yet another Gucci or D&G boutique - which interests me not!

Dom Knigi on Novi Arbat has a fair map collection but Biblio-Globus, next to the Lubianka, has more. Their map section is on a half landing on a staircase. They are particularly good for street maps for regional areas/towns/cities across Russia.
No real logical order to them, but worth a browse on a lunch time!
