Garmin Zumo 660 connection question

I have acquired a second hand Zumo 660 and I have a question about the USB and mains charger connections.

What is the purpose of the mini USB connector on the automobile mount? Is it intended for charging or for connecting to Basecamp?

The Zumo is not recognized by my PC if I plug the USB cable into this socket. If I remove the battery cover and use the USB connector inside then I get a connection and the Zumo is recognized by PC and Basecamp.

Is this normal? I can't believe that I have to remove the battery cover every time I want to load a route or use the mains charger.

Yup. Not a great design. The mini USB port on the car mount is for a traffic receiver, so don't try charging via the port.

I use my Zumo 660 extensively on the motorbikes, but I've now embraced Waze running on an iPhone for car navigation as it is aware of current traffic conditions.

I've successfully removed the mini USB wire from mine, as it had no obvious use. I just trimmed it off near the junction block separated out the strands and taped them up to prevent the different strands shorting on each other.

Removing the battery cover is a pain, but I only have to do that for uploading data from my PC (Usually indoors) as the mount charges it whenever it's in use and I'm happy knowing the zumo is very waterproof because of that annoying battery cover.

Thanks for the reply Tim.

I was confused first by the overly simplified nature of the manual and second by the fact the the USB cable I was given is faulty. I'm using a different cable now and I have been able to upload routes created in BaseCamp. :thumbup1:

I have now have other questions but I'll put them tidily in their own threads.
