Garmin Quest II/60cx for Morocco trip ?

Servus from Vienna !

We want to do a trip to Morocco and we also want to ride through parts of the sahara. So I defenitly want to buy a GPS.

After some research on the Internet we decided to buy a GPS Quest II. Yesterday I bought a Motorcycle Traveller Magazin which says that the Quest II isn't produced anymore because of some technical problems.:confused1:

Is that true ?

If so why ? My second choice would be the GPSMAP 60CX.

What are your advices ?

Greetings from Austria

The quest2 may well have been discontinued by now - it's a pretty old design and Garmin now produce the bike specific Zumo so there's no real market for it.
If you're buying new then take a look at the Zumo - it's got a good size screen and a good range of features. The 60cx would be an excellent unit for Morocco and has a few more features for storing tracks, but it's not as easy to use for road navigation and the screens a bit smaller.
There are a few sellers on ebay doing the Garmin 276c for similar money to the Zumo - it's probably the best there is for off-road use, but some users may find it a bit OTT for their needs.
I'd avoid the quest - i find the small size makes it fiddly to use and the screen is too small.
Whichever one you get download this free mapset of Morocco:

and what do you think about

an used street pilot III color which you can get quite cheap on ebay ?

I think at the moment I will just use it for the morocco trip.

If we decide to do something bigger than that (we dream about doing the Panmericana) I would defentiliy go for an 276 C

But will the streetpilot III color do ?

Thanx

I used a Quest 1 for a similar trip which worked ok . Used a home made bike mount that cost me £2 & any idiot could make (i did) & worked fine.

I owned a SPIII a while back and it's good unit for the money. If you're just using it for this trip then it'll be fine. It'll hold 50 routes and 500 waypoints which should be enough and the screen is nice and big. The minus points are that it's pretty bulky and the tracklog memory isn't big enough to be of any real use.
The route calculation is very slow compared to modern units, but this won't be a problem for you since the Morocco maps don't support auto-routing anyway.
If you're buying secondhand make sure it comes with a memory card and the Garmin mapsource software so you can connect it to your PC to load up new maps.
If you can find a 2610 for only a little more then it's worth paying the extra for the newer unit - the features are pretty similar, but in a smaller package with a touch screen.

just came back from morocco using a 60csx with map mark lg suggests and it was great, even the tracks i done were quite accurate. the 60 series screen is a bit small though but it worked fine.
