Garmin 60Csx or Garmin eTrex. Which to Take?

I'm renting a motorcycle and gear for a 2 week trip to Laos

I am renting the GPS as well and have the choice of these two-

Garmin 60Csx model GPS.* This unit comes runs on 2 AA batteries and has a base Lao map installed. Tour waypoints available and handlebar overlay mount comes with the unit.* Screen is black and white.

Garmin eTrex hand held reciever.* This unit runs on 2 AA batteries.* Screen is colour and a Lao base map is installed.* Tour waypoints available and this unit has a handlebar mount.

I have never used a GPS before and will literally pick up the bike and go.

Would appreciate any feedback on these units regarding ease of use, screen visibility etc.
Without knowing much about either unit (seems online reviews are mixed) the obvious difference seems the larger black and white screen of the 60Csx Vs smaller colour screen of the Etrex.

Any thoughts at all would be great.

Cheers,

James

The 60csx is colour and is the one I'd choose

Rather than rent when not buy a 2nd hand one for $100 or so and spend some time getting used to it?

Plenty of free maps are available

thats interesting, i took that description of black and white screen from the website.

No luck finding one locally. Also i would still have to pay $55 for the laos map produced locally which is pretty much the bible for gps in laos. I'm sure there are free maps but everything i have read about laos is, dont waste time and spend the $55 for the map

+1

Both good units . . . the 60 CSX has a better chip (SIRF) for locating and holding satellites but . . . it's not like you're gonna go wandering off trail in Laos. The battery life is EXCELLENT on both but better on the eTrex IF it's a Vista or Legend (color) as is the display (I own both).

How are these mounted - Ram mounts ? The RAM 60 mount is awful - one of their only non-superlative products. The chipset in the 60 is faster and in town would lead to better performance.

I know a fella whose pretty well-known for maps in SE Asia and . . . I'd have a look at the OSM (free) maps. Bicycling Laos 15 years ago meant lots of dirt . . . etc. Alot harder to find that now.

Thanks for that. Not sure on the mounts.
The map will be on the unit so will not have to download anything.
Will go with the 60 Csx based on the feedback.
cheers
