Free SatNav on your Android using OSM maps

No longer do you need a roaming data connection!
(unless you want to update the maps of course)

Just found this and am trying it out.

Install Navfree available from googleplay

then download whichever country/ies you want- maps are stored on your android.
:thumbup1:
Example
Andorra
free quarterly map updates for 12 months-
(I've no idea what happens when that time limit has been reached.)

Croatia
updated every 2 months

CZ published date 09/11/2011 so it would seem the OSM data may be out of data here. Check the date on each map-

France
1,013GB Nov2012
So it seems not all maps have a time restriction on them.

still experimenting.... no 'kaboom' yet!:smiliex:
Interesting
POI can be selected to display or not via a tick box
Choice of day or night mode
Has a google search option built in (need data on for that)
Route overview
Find
Routing options
Adjustable volume
and quite a lot more in the 'preferences' menu

still looking

Do you store the maps on a micro sd card then..?

The France map alone would wipe out my device memory..:eek3:

You could also try MapswithMe (free), available for both android and iOS (apple).

Also stores all maps on your device, or SD-card, also based on OSM.
Large countries (as in many roads, lots of data, instead of big surface area) are split into provinces, so if memory is an issue you can download just the bits you need.

if memory is not an issue, the entire world requires about 8GB...

maybe worth a comparison?

Have you use it much in the past month Bertrand, no kaboom yet?
Can you tell us more of what you think if you are able?

I've installed navfree though not any maps yet.
Am I right in thinking that you can select and download the first map free, and then you need to buy additional maps?

I'm also playing around with QLandkarteGT which when I first tried it I thought was awful, but now, having spent some time with it and with OSM in general, it is working pretty darn good actually. I can make maps images for my Zumo-550.
I've also installed it and setting it up on my little Dell D420 which I take on trips.

Having something like navfree or some other offline mapping app could be handy.

Anyhow, getting all things ready for coming back over to Europe end of June.

Currently experimenting/learning to use GPS Essentials for Android
More user friendly
Mapping can be stored for off line use.
Overall I prefer this software to the previous
and still no 'kaboom'! not that I'll be placing my phone on my handlebars anytime soon!
For that, staying with the Montana.:Beach:
