spooky 18 Nov 2011 21:22

yes thank you very much for your extensive WP files.. very much appreciate your work... :)

well a minor issue, which may not apply to everyone who is trying to unpack and read the files.. but yeah... may it's only me but I noticed that "all" countries you did write with the German "Umlaute" are not being correctly unpacked on PC's with "non-German" keyboards... actually all countries containing a "Ä, ü ö ß" appear as "?" sign like T?rkei" as a sample... this are declared corrupt on my UK-keyboard under a UNIX OS, even using UTF-8 Unicode fonts, can't rename the file names which is a pain... but yes on the German M$-Windoof PC they show up correct... :helpsmilie:

question... regarding that we are here in a international forum on HU... and not that many of us own a German keyboard here... :innocent:

well would it be possible to alter or supply your future edition files with country names containing "ae, oe, ue and ss" instead of the "Ä, ü ö ß" please.. or may just write "Turkey" instead of "Türkei" and so on..
would make live a bit easier... at least for most of the HU folk... :thumbup1:

keep going.. your contribution is a valuable source for all of us... thanks

Ulrich 19 Nov 2011 12:01

Sorry Spooky,

UNIX is for me a strange world. I think the most users have no problems. You are the first.

Maybe if Arial Unicode MS is installed it works. This font You can get for free by Microsoft. The filename isARIALUNI.TTF.

That's true, but the first versions of my file have been only published in foren with german language. Later I placed it here too. If I had thought before, that I will publish the file on english-language forums, I would have used no Ä, Ö, Ü, ß, but now, take it as it is cause I'm too "tired" to change it.

well, well that's a shame really... :(

Good work Ulrich your have done huge and marvellous job to get all files to together.

Looking at all the POI's my wild guess > 300 hours work and free of charge. bier

I think Spooky can change POI names by him self if he needs and save them what ever name's he want it....:confused1:

Ulrich

just to make it clear... the following is NOT the way I would like to see any discussion on the HU to start... but I have to comment at least...

well I know why I don't like teacher and the German attitude at all... doh

hold you horses.. will you... looks like you lost the plot some how... :offtopic:

I tried to give you some constructive input by asking politely to internationalise your work to make it even better... not pulling it down... :nono:
did you got lost in translation ?
stick to your German Forum if you can't bear a suggestion...

your reaction only showing arrogance and ignorant "oh I'm to tired can't be arsed" and now you start throwing stones (or is it chalk, like you do in your school) at some one who tries to make this world a bit better... and now you getting very personally aggressive and offensive... not a good attitude to do so here on the HU... is that the way they teaches kid's in school this days to act ?

by the way, while we are kicking around... your wording "didn't like to honor" is correctly written like "honour"... looks like your spell checker got a fault too... the spelling "honor" is yank stuff... "Mr teacher"...

actually all this really proofing my experiences with "the Germans" as such... (sadly I'm carrying this passport too)... what a pity...

I know why I would rather join a table of drinking, joking, singing and
piss-taking Scot's and English man if I would have the choice between a
table to choose, one that's surrounded by stiff Germans or wacky Brits in a pub... well the choice is easy I guess...
shit I'm just grown up on the wrong side of live... :( :helpsmilie:

I'm fed up with this...

didn't got it did you... absolutely hopeless...

talking about teacher as "professional teacher in school", read what's written there... Teutscher Lehrer which you are... must have been sitting in the blazing sun for some time for to long... doh

anyway this has to be stopped at some stage...
so... I suggest you rather carry on dreaming about your "honor" and stop picking on others, this is not a accustoms on HU, may on "Teutsche Foren".. so stick it..
This behaviour doesn't get you anywhere... only showing and proofing your arrogance, not to be able to solve the matter in a descend way.... very poor...

yeah well... forgot to add this one...

you are both great guys, you make the whole forum laugh, we are sitting here in New Zealand having some beers and listening two Germans who accuse the other one to be sooo much more German, that’s great! Keep on! Maybe open one more thread in the fun zone, this is priceless! Gorgeous! Tomorrow we have some more beer and we want some news and stories from Down Under Germany and of cause want to find out who is the GERMANST one among the GERMANS.

Please keep the story rolling but open a new Thread for that, dont you think?

:funmeteryes:

Ps.: A big THX for all the POI´s, doesnt matter if with the öäü... or not...

...appear as "?" sign like T?rkei" as a sample... this are declared corrupt on my UK-keyboard under a UNIX OS, even using UTF-8 Unicode fonts, can't rename the file names which is a pain...

my request was about to fix a bug that appear in combination with the öäü... that's all...

Filenames OK once extracted...

Yikes!

I don't really want to step into that :hammer:, but just want to say that as a Linux user, the file names appear corrupted with ??'s when viewed in the archive manager, but once the files are extracted from the zip file, the filenames are fine. No ??'s.

Also, just want to say thanks to Ulrich for the thread and for his hard work, and to the many contributors. Saved my bacon one night in the rain when I was looking for a campsite in the mountains (OK... hills) of eastern Pennsylvania.

rockwallaby 30 Jan 2013 11:46

Ulrich,

Can you help me out please?

I have no idea to easily find out which of your files are the latest?
Bertrand wrote:
Quote:

Could you please indicate the date the download was last updated please?
For me, this thread has very useful information, but it is a total mess and not easy at all to find what files are what with what information and how recent they are.

Normally I see on forums where the OP puts up a maintained thread, say for instructions or for files, a person only needs to go to the first post to be assured to get the latest files.

I read through this thread and at some point Ulrich wrote:
Quote:

The new files are there only as a Google Earth KML. This leaves, in contrast to GPX, which is visible in Google Earth filed additional information.
Which leaves me more confused. I understand from this that the new files are only KML, and no GPX? I don't understand what you are saying in the other part of that comment?

I wish to have files for camping locations for my Zumo 550 or something that I can put into my Android Galaxy.

Then Bertrand has files of his own, csv (note to Bertrand, csv is not excel specific as you wrote a number of posts back). CSV is a standard format for the handling of text based data, and one that Microsoft Excel can use, as do countless other programs. Let's talk open source if possible, leave the term 'Excel' out.

Also, reading through this thread I noticed Spooky bringing to Ulrick's attention the issue of using internationalised format, as it could potentially pose problems for others who firstly do not use German as their preferred language and who do prefer to use other computer operating system. I also do not use Microsoft windows and don't want to be told to use a Microsoft font as Ulrich proposed to Spooky. In fact, that doesn't really sort out the initial problem, just hides it I believe.

Have others out there who use Linux or OSX have any issues?
If so, then it needs to be fixed so all can use these good files of Ulrich.

I hope I am pointing something out that others too find difficult about sorting through this thread to find the right file and to understand more precisely what is included.

This seems strange to me, as I have always thought the German folk were always very precise.

I would really appreciate if someone was able to organise the various files and what they are and have them placed in one location, say at the first post, or does someone have another suggestion?

I must be tired, today I've just returned from enjoying a scenic 300km trip up the east coast of Tasmania with blue water, from a few days camping. The bike and I were one, total grin factor.

I do appreciate the enormous effort gone into producing data files like this and thank Ulrich for this. I only wish to see that it can be used by all regardless of language or computer operating system preferences in an easy to understand and use manner.

I shall wait with much anticipation.

Kind regards,
Paul

Probably a dumb question (apologies)

I love the work you've done, Ulrich, thank you. I can see all these campsites in Google Earth, etc. It's a fantastic resource.

I also like the OSM project, I have a 60CSX and have downloaded some routable maps from this and they work great on the unit.

Without connecting to Mapsource, is there any way to combine both your camping list (for, say France) and the French routable maps from OSM?

My ideal is to be able to cross the channel and ride as far as I feel like, then find local camping, without having to plan so much in advance. And without taking a laptop. 60CSX and Android phone (Note 2) specifically.

I use a MAc at home, but have access to a PC. I would love to avoid Mapsource. I Installed it when I bought the unit, but don't want to invest the time to get good at it if possible.

Thanks in advance

Will

Toyark 15 Mar 2013 15:36

1- sorry I don't 'do' Mac!
2- Simplest way for you is this:

a) create a folder called 'garmin' on your micro sd card
b) copy Ulrich's .GPX file/s into it
c) place card in 60csx
power on
job done

you will be able to see the waypoint and navigate to them but will not be able to edit these on the gps - you can via mapsource on a PC. Others can send you .gdb2 files you can on mapsource and which you can 'send to unit'.
And you can do both... I would suggest you carry a small micro sd card reader- files can be sent to your email (or stored in your Note2) and you can copy the attached gpx file from your Note2 to your gps micro card inserted in it- No need for a web cafe!

Reading you appear to have a Galaxy Note 2 - (you're up to speed on your tecchy smart phone but lagging behind on gps!!:blushing: Get a Montana and the 'pain' will be over!)
(or just beginning if you're unwilling to learn new stuff!)
anyway, as I was saying, you will have many navigation software options- Sygic being one of them as 'belt and braces' for planning maybe?

Oga Will 15 Mar 2013 18:24

Thanks so much Bertrand...

I will try this before asking too many questions. I'm guessing the POIs layer on top of the OSM? I have the OSM .img file already in the Garmin folder.

I love learning new stuff, just at the time I felt the Garmin software was about to die out (obviously it hasn't) and didn't know whether it was worth the time invested.

I bought the 60CSX via a friend in the States when it was $150 or something, and love how rugged it is. I want something that's always on and visible on the bike as I ride.

Yes Note 2 is lovely, and what I use in the car in the UK when I need to check a map, but I don't want to consume data overseas, it's valuable, not waterproof, not vibration proof, etc.

I will check out "Sygic" straight away!

Thanks again

Will

Where it says "Page 2 of 2" put your mouse pointer on page 1 (this is a link), then copy that link. In Windows that's a right-click, then "Copy link location". Open your bookmarks and paste the link wherever you want.

Note that this will give you a link to the 1st page of the topic. I don't know whether it's possible to create a link to the last page.

That gets you to page 999 .. if that does not exist (and it probably won't) it gets you to the 'last page'

You'll need to manually edit your bookmark to store it for other threads, for this thread you might be able to save the above link before clicking it?

Hello everybody,

Thanks a lot for your great effort Ullrich. I love the idea of using this. But I do not know how...

I have zumo 550.
I deleted the gpsmapprom of the gps and replaced it by T4A and named it gpsmapprom
I put also osm on a sd card that I named gpsmapsupp.
I hope this is working, i am not sure...

Now I downloaded all your waypoints and put them in a map called 'garmin' on the sd card. I do not know if the gps is finding the points or not. I even got the impression that the gps is finding less points then before. It looks like he deleted a lot of points. How can I check this?
Is there a point that is typically Ullrich alike?
or typically osm?
or typically T4A?
On this way I can check everything,

thanks a lot

SimonLore 1 Nov 2013 22:28

I really think the points are NOT installed on my gps. I have found anything.

For the moment I am in sudan and te closes point of interest I can find on my gps is 300 km away...

Warin 2 Nov 2013 02:57

If you have the embassies WAYPOINTS then there are a number of them in Khartoum Sudan;

Egypt
Germany
Saudi Arabia
Yemen
Ethiopia

If you have them on your GPS then you have the embassy.gpx on it.

----------------------
Maps;
T4A does not have much in northern africa ... it does have more in the south. I don't (yet) have OSM for africa so cannot comment, but I'd not expect much. These both depend on people contribution their tracks to get data on them, more people with gps = more roads, less people with gps = less roads.

If you contribute your tracks to OSM then the next person will have those roads.

If you contribute your waypoints to OSM then the next person will have them. You can also contribute them to Ullrich too.

SimonLore 2 Nov 2013 05:19

Hi,

When I put the SD card in my pc, it shows all the gpx and kml file of Ullrich. All of them. But I do not know how I can check on my gps if those files are on it or not.

I checked for the embassys now and have not found any in khartoum... ;-(

What did I do wrong? I have to transfer it with basecamp? I do not think that is needed?

thanks for the help in advance.

rockwallaby 2 Nov 2013 05:35

Simon,
I to have a Zumo 550 and used it extensively this year in Europe after converting it to use OSM maps. It worked absolutely fantastic, never leading me astray as was often the case with others I travelled with this year. I wanted to make sure I could realy on the zumo for navigation and for finding camp sites and other points of interest with the minimal of fuss. It did.

Now, the OSM maps have a lot of POI already in the map file, but I wanted to see if the camping POI files say from Ulrich would provide additional camp spots.

What I had to do to have the Zumo 550 know that I had extra gpx files is I had to use a small program that would take the file and convert it to the correct format for the Zumo. What Ulrich provides is the plain gpx and kml files, but your Zumo can not use the gpx file as you have in the zip file.

Give me a little while and I will fire up the other computer I used and see if I can recall the process and report back.
It is not difficult, but I also went through a similar head scratching excerise.

Just to let you know I don't use MSWindows or the Garmin programs.
I use Ubuntu on my laptops and use QLandkart to make the exact maps of what I need while on the road using the latest OSM tiles.

For the gpx to gpi converter I think the program I use is babel, which is an amazing little program that does much.

Can you let us know what you have in terms of computer OS.

Thanks a lot for your answer.

My computer is crashed in the dessert of Jordan.

Now I am working on a computer of a fellow traveller. This is a windows 7 ultimate microsoft. For internet he uses firefox and all the rest there is not much changed of the normal ususal stuff comparing when you would buy a laptop.

In what kind of file format do I have to put it so my zumo can read it? In the past I have already put gpx filed on my garmin that he could find instead. But most of them they were also used in a route or track...

thanks for the help!

rockwallaby 2 Nov 2013 05:59

Simon;
Quote:

Can you explain in more detail what you mean when you say you replaced the gpsmapprom and also what you mean when you say you put osm on the sd card.

Also, can you tell me exactly what is is on the Zumo itself under the 'GARMIN' folder, what have you changed and tell me if the unit is working ok for navigation as of right now.

Right, I have my little laptop up and going and can see the program I used is 'Gebabbel', it is a graphical front end for the actual program babbel which does the converting.

My understanding is that the Zumo will not read the gpx file directly as a POI file, it may read it as a gpx file which really is for storing tracks and routes not POI. So you need to convert the file to the gpi format. As soon as I did that the zumo would find the POI in the menu called 'Extras'.

Maybe I can convert the file you want here in sunny Tasmania and make it available to you via dropbox? If this is an idea then I need to know exactly what file you want. Maybe give me a URL to it if you have.

SimonLore 2 Nov 2013 06:10

Hi Rockwallaby,

That would be awesome!!! We are now in Sudan and untill now we used the gps a lot more than we ever tought of using it in the beginning. That is the reason why I started searching for more tracks, waypoints etc on the internet. Then I found the file of Ullrich and started trying to download it.

So when I have a look to the files of Ullrich I am interested in everything of Africa and especially the more southern countries like following: sudan, ethiopia, kenia, uganda, tanzania, zambia, zimbabwe, botswana, namibia, south africa.

Is it possible for you to help me out with this?

The T4A is bought on a SD card. There was still a lot of space available so I downloaded the OSM maps from the internet and installed it on the sd card as supp. Then I deleted the gpsmapprom that was originally on the gps and I copied the T4A to the garmin itself and renamed it to gpsmapprom. When I go to map info on the gps I can choose now which kind of map I want to work with. the T4A or the OSM. He recognises both of them.

To navigate he does not find any streets or something, but when I put coordinates or waypoints everything goes fine with the osm. Untill now I did not try it yet with the T4A.

Thanks

rockwallaby 2 Nov 2013 06:24

Ok, understood.

Yes, I can help you with this.

In a moment I will send you a PM which will contain a link to a Dropbox folder I have just set up where you can store and retreive files.

I'll give you some other details as well in that PM.
____
Paul

rockwallaby 2 Nov 2013 08:33

Simon,
I have done a gpx to gpi conversion for Sudan as I believe you mentioned you are currently in Sudan and you could put this file into the Zumo main memory under "/GARMIN/GPX" folder. Then when you power up the Zumo and go into the menu and find 'Extras' you should then see the Sudan POI file to use.

I have shifted the dropbox folder to a slightly different location where you will see two files, one is the original Sudan.gpx and the other is the converted Sudan.gpi format for the Zumo.

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/3bygezmypugfzgv/0HB3_t3vT1

Let me know via email how you proceed with this.
Santé
Paul

EDIT: oops, the file should go into the "/GARMIN/POI" folder of your Zumo, not the GPX.

Ulrich 8 Dec 2013 16:54

Hi all,

thanks for more than 30.000 views! :smiliex:

Happy travelling, merry christmas and a happy new year.

Ulrich

P.S.: Maybe an update is coming soon.

rockwallaby 8 Dec 2013 22:08

Ulrich,
It would be so great if you were able to rename your files to be in English.
I guess there will be a far greater number of English speaking users that come here and make use of the KML/GPX files.
You, yourself speak English on this thread.

I have renamed quite a number of them a few times now for other people. Some of the country names just don't display correctly on non German computers and then some countries are spelt altogether differently.
For example, the file camping welt, a lot of people would wonder what on Earth is welt. Also to find the country of Chad, you find it at Tchad, I think?

Also, many people wish to use the Garmin GPI format, but need to somehow do a conversion which is often difficult for them to do. Again, it would wonderful to have this format too as part of the files.

I hope you will consider my suggestion as worthwhile and do before the next update, or maybe this will be part of the next update.
