Buying Garmin Maps for 2 devices
 

I have a friend who bought 2 different Garmin sat Navs , I think 220 and 410 or something. Can he buy one map update and add to both or does he need to buy for both

I put OSM maps on but he complains about the lack of postcodes

Garmin map products are restricted to one device. Hence, if you have two devices, you need to make two map purchases.

There may be rare exceptions, such as very old map products, but generally speaking, anything released in the last 5 to 7 years will be locked to the serial number of the device it is installed on.

It may be possible to purchase a Garmin map product on a mini or micro SD card direct from Garmin, and then swap that SD card from one device to another. You'll have to ask Garmin about that. But, if it is possible, you will have to get the SD card preloaded from Garmin, as opposed to electronically downloading the file and installing it on your own card.

So... add the 'postcodes' to OSM if you know where they are.

Or, as PanEuropean above says, buy the maps from Garmin, one for each device. $$$

Garmin maps on one, OSM maps on the other. Adds to the interest of the journey to have two people nagging you AND hones your decision-making skills trying to decide which one to obey at 130kmph

I've just finished a couple of weeks of road trip by 4 wheeler doing exactly that - throw in a directionally-challenged wife with a selection of maps dating back up to 25 years (which have sentimental value to me) and it made things quite interesting at times, albeit at a slightly more sedate pace.

Do I follow the Nuvi algorithm based on 6 year old maps, the app using OSM that updates every second week, my wife armed with a map of Germany while I am over the border in France (but still muttering in my ear) or my own instinct?

I currently use the Android app "navigator" combined with OSM for such tasks and it does full postcode searches of the UK.
It also finds postcodes for France but theirs are not quite as specific.

ps the cost = zero.
They do an extra feature which encourages purchase of Tom tom mapping but that is not compulsory.

Sadly he has iPhone but may have a look for something like that

There are a few posts spread around in here about the itunes' alternatives.

Maps.me ain't too bad on the iPhone. I use the UK and Thailand maps and find them fine
