$7.95 App better than Garmin Montana 650t

Ive had a Garmin 650t for a few months now and have had to pay for an additional 3 maps (Spain, Morocco and Europe) and whilst travelling outside of Turkey into Georgia there are no more maps from Garmin for my route (heading east to Mongolia)...

I also have a Nexus 7 Tab and downloaded the OsmAnd+ App. Traveling recently from Spain to Georgia through 12 countries I can truly say the Android OsmAnd App is much better than my Garmin unit with better detail, easier to use, quicker and map updates are also free and regular.

No issues with formats using OSM maps to Garmin unit and every country in the world all for $7.95.

An Android hardware unit and this software App is definitely the better choice and a fraction of the price of Garmin.

It depends what you use your GPS for. I wouldn't take a bulky, somewhat fragile 7 inch tablet with < 10 hour battery life and a non-replaceable battery as a primary GPS on an overnight backcountry hike, or even a day hike. For a car trip where you can have it charge while you drive, it's probably a pretty acceptable GPS.

There are free OSM maps available for the Garmin GPS.

OSMAnd uses Open Street Map (OSM) data to make its maps. You can get the same data into maps for your Garmin GPS off the web for free. Any difference in detail, colours and shapes is simply that of the map maker, the underlying data that is available to the map maker is the same.

Speed: I use OSMAnd on a Galaxy S4mini. It is slower than my Garmin 60Cx, and I like the features/useability of it over the S4, though I've been using the 60Cx a lot longer than the S4.

------------------------
I do like the OSMAnd rendering (map making) especially the Car vs Bicycle vs Pedestrian modes .. each shows features for that mode of transport. It does motivate me to add things (data) that are not on the OSM map.
