Kuala Lumpur - Trading Motorcycle Travel Tales, Secrets and Adventures - March 21

Motorcycle riders, writers, dreamers and adventurists are invited to join in an afternoon and evening of trading travel tales, secrets and gossip at an informal gathering on March 21, 2015 in KL from 4:00 PM until?

Topics will include what is the best motorcycle for long distance travel, travel equipment options, routes around South East Asia or around the world and general chin wagging.

Ride your motorcycle for possible photo inclusion in a magazine article, bring wild stories of adventure or share your dreams of a never ending motorcycle ride with experienced and newbie riders. It is a free event, open to the general public and any travelers passing through KL. Location to be announced, possibly a restaurant in Central KL.

Kuala Lumpur 102 years earlier by motorcycle

Carl Stearns Clancy, the first motorcyclist to circle the globe, landed by boat from Celyon in Penang, in April, 1913. His plan was to off-load his 1912 Henderson motorcycle and “motor down the peninsular to Singapore.”

In the book about his ‘round the world ride MOTORCYCLE ADVENTURER - Dr. Gregory W. Frazier : iUniverse Clancy noted:

“Careful inquiry informed me, however, that this would be impossible, for the roads, which were perfect as far as they go, extend only as far south as Malacca, or 150 miles short of Singapore. The remaining distance - a swampy jungle - could have been covered by boat or train, but poor connections and the limited time precluded even this arrangement.”

Clancy would have passed through Kuala Lumpur in April of 1913 had his planned overland route been possible.

While unsuccessful in motoring down to Singapore, Clancy did have success in meeting several local motorcyclists in Penang and gathered information which was later published about what to expect while riding motorcycles in Malaysia.

I will have a couple of copies of MOTORCYCLE ADVENTURER for anyone interested in reading about how a motorcyclist saw Malaysia and the rest of the world he passed through 102 years ago. The book is available for purchase through Amazon.

Malaysia Tales and Trails

A most interesting meeting with Malaysian motorcycle travelers. Welly Advance Bikers and Sunny Cycle offered a unique look into the world of the Malaysian motorcycling community.
A special "Thank you" is due Alison Sandra Murugesu for taking time out of her active life to share insights on overlanding, Sunny for the numerous introductions, "Wedge" for his wild tales of adventure and the Singapore Dream Team of Goh and Sam for shepherding the travelers and myself around and sharing Goh's birthday dinner.
Best,
