Wi-Fi availability

Is it easy to find wi-fi in Morocco (not the largest towns) these days?

PS: If you're in Morocco now or very soon, I just posted this thread: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...689#post539347

We bought a Maroc telecom dongle. Coverage is as good as the 3g mobile signal. Seemed fine in the main towns and routes, but not up in the mountains. I've now bought a MiFi gadget.

Thanks Mark.

What about road side cafes and restaurants. Do they often offer Wi-Fi?

PanEuropean 23 May 2016 12:55

I spent a month in Morocco last year.

Most hotels and most higher-end coffee shops & restaurants have Wi-Fi. It's not quite as universal as you will find in Europe or North America, but it's available if you look for it. So far as road-side cafes go, the probability of having free Wi-Fi is directly proportionate to the price you pay for a cup of coffee.

Having said that, you really don't need to depend on Wi-Fi in Morocco. For about $20, you can get a prepaid SIM card at Maroc Telecom that will give you more than enough data access for email, minor web browsing, finding your way around, etc., as well as a local phone number.

Only go for Maroc Telecom. 3 Euro for SIM card and up to 10 Euro for 12gb of data. I had an INWI SIM card before but it was terrible and barely worked even in the major cities. Maroc Telecom has been pretty good everywhere

+1 to what Wanted said above.

I have no experience with other telecom providers in Morocco, but I was very pleased with Maroc telecom. Cheap, good national coverage, and reasonably fast.

Thanks a bunch. I'll might buy a prepaid Maroc telecom sim then!

My experience with INWI was ok, but only in cities and not south of Agadir or in the desert. So Maroc Telecom should have better coverage - there are maps showing coverage if you google.
INWI was 100 DH for one month, I could call and text also to Europe quite a bit.
Including 12 GB of internet, but that would take more than one month to spend, too slow.
They said 4G but in reality mostly 2G.

TheWarden 24 May 2016 16:47

Never really pick up INWI on my phone when in Morocco, stick with Maroc Telecom (Mor IAM) or Meditel

There was generally no problem to find Wi-Fi these days. Most places you can get coffee and most auberges and certainly hotels have Wi-Fi.

I did not bother getting a pre paid sim card!

Tim Cullis 2 Jun 2016 17:19

My experience as well. The previous two trips I didn't bother with a Moroccan SIM card, just used cafes and hotel wifi. Most recent trip I did get a SIM to use Google Maps satellite view whilst on pistes, but then found GM sat view was blocked anyway.

I downloaded maps for morocco using the "maps.me" app for an offline gps.
It worked quite well, at least we got an accurate feeling of where we were when we had not seen a road sign fir many many miles.

Just back home from a trip to Morocco.
WiFi is everywhere. Like others said, every Cafe and Hotel has it.

I managed to use VOIP via my sipgate and VOIPwise accounts with great success.
The MarocTelecom SIM works great as well. 4GB of data for a whole month for 30Dh.

My experience from spending 2 weeks in Southern Moroco and two other weeks in Tunisia in April and May of this year, is that most hotels and café have wifi. But it doesn't mean that the internet connection will be quick. I swore more than once. I usually had a very hard time to use Facetime. But good enough for sending emails and a picture or two. Cell coverage though is usually pretty good.
