Western Sahara offroad trip

Hi all,

we're planning a trip to Western Sahara.

Unfortunately I couldn't find much information about traveling off pistes cross country.

Looks like you can travel around extensively - note the tracks on the maps:
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hubb/morocco/western-sahara-trip-report-55301

and if you stay far away from the minefields
www.desert-info.ch :: Thema anzeigen - Minen/Landmines/Des Mines - alle/all/toutes infos

what do you think is the risk of discovering landmines with your own wheels in the areas between those tracks and pistes?

Also, as it's mostly flat, are there good spots to wildcamp like wadis... out of sight?

Thank you!

Mike

Travelling to the inland of Western Sahara is possible, and some of us do this regularly (some experiences written on my blog, mostly in Slovene language).

Landmine situation generally overinflated.
Gandini's Sahara Atlantique guidebook technically very good, full of usefull info and ideas where to go (written in French).

As vrecha says, it is possible to travel in the region. Inform you (as you did) on the landmines and better stay on the pistes in those areas.

Note that there's quite some army deployment recently (throughout Morocco) due to a general terrorism alert. For the Sahara this means reinforcements along the berm, Farsiya,... even surface-to-air missiles in Laâyoune. Don't know yet if or how this will affect individual travel in the region. Probably not too much but it can slow things down.

No problem to find nice camp spots if you watch for them early enough.

As I´ve said several times mines are a real danger. I don´t think it´s a overinflated situation as Vrecha says.

Last week a shepperd died 50 Km East of Bojador in a mine explosion

Never go out of marked and used tracks. The danger is real

More details about last week accident. Sorry, in Spanish but Google translates.

This incident has been caused by one of these "residual mines" that can be found in cleaned areas. Obviously it´s not a overestimated danger.

Abdellahi Eljarshi, otra víctima mortal de las minas del muro marroquí. Y van…

Another accident with land mines in an area not suposed to be mined near Smara
